Survive? natural food’ll save us

Return to “Natural Food”  which we are genetically programmed to use

It probably seems  that I’m hammering away on this issue of “You Are what You Eat and can utilize”  I am! because the issue is one that must be clearly understood if one is going to be able to incorporate it.  Unless there are vital changes in our land starting with each individual setting his/her own sail with determination to follow thru. . . well, frankly, there won’t be much hope for our species no matter who is president or which nation is destroying the others.. . . or if Monsanto and all the other “Processors of food-stuff” into  toxic pap, grows even bigger and more powerful or even implodes with the weight of their ‘karma’.  (joke)

. . so yes,  I have focused in on this deeply, pointedly because science has in fact been providing new and wonderful — proven beyond a theoretic level, basis which is living proof about why humans get sick and what to do to keep it from happening.  And the solutions are in our awareness of the importance of sound nutrition, what it is.   During 2014 I’ve stressed Dr Blaylock several times because he has had it right for so long.  Dr Mark Hyman, Dr Stephen Sinatra,  Dr Joel Fuhrman.  I would be remiss not to mention Dr Harry Elwardt whose book enabled me to boldly take over my own heart therapy and profit thereby, yesterday was my 85th B.D.

But there is somewhat of a revolution going on now which is exciting.  The food pyramid has been turned on its head.  Those who faithfully cling to it ‘anyway,’  will remain stuck with the sickness industry.  Couple of weeks ago with Donal O’Neill’s CEREAL KILLERS was about the final blow for me.  Absolutely stunning as he showed us ‘how’ he overcame his genetic markers for diabetes and heart disease with very high fat diet  and very low carbs.

He was consuming fat in excess of 70%; buying nuts and seeds by the tens of pounds, eating over 2 dozen eggs weekly, minimal fruit – only berries and tons of colorful leafy veggies. NO GRAINS at all or vegetables which grow below the ground. What’d all that fat do to his cholesterol?   It was high!  But the cholesterol was happily swimming, freely flowing (not stuck) and they are very large in size, ergo, can’t enter the cells where any possible damage could be done.   Our hearts and brains are the two vital organs which strongly require ample cholesterol or they wither and break down, which is why heart disease has risen so dramatically after it was targeted as unhealthy and it was popular to prescribe cholesterol-lowering drugs over the last 4 or 5 decades. Ditto for Alzheimer’s which used to be rare indeed or even unknown at that time.

So we’ve had pieces and parts of this new (for us) way of thinking about food . . but it’s NOT NEW, it is how mankind has always (naturally) eaten.  And no-one will tell it better or simpler than one of the world’s finest, most convincing minds known as Dr David Perlmutter.   His Brain Change  program that I saw on PBS recently is frankly riveting . .it’s to ‘live’ for.   But I had no luck accessing it to bring to you.   Found an interesting interview @ Fox and friends, first – very casual and many questions we’d all like answers to.     If not yet satisfied, there is another interview   in the Atlantic which is like 5 pages long.  Much objectivity and some dissenters there, but essentially well done and allows a fine cross section of thinking.   enjoy. . .   .   Jan

Vaccination endangers children

This important subject is from Dr Mercola; its XLNT and needed to share it with you.

Not hot off the presses, but it should be.  I can think of nothing outside our children that rates with an equal amount of concern as the subject of how vaccination  affects our children.  The evidence skyrockets with every passing decade.  The laws and regulations were blown away – RIGGED, before the subject ever got off the ground.

Our country stands alone in this “Absolute Rule” of BIG PhRMA, and the government went along so that  today, the didactic authoritarianism of the Medical complex is able to terrorize parents into submission or they are denied the process of education and normal life as a consequence.  Young parents especially, don’t know what to do, lacking cynicism and experience in order to fight against these horrendous circumstances.  It is wrong — dead wrong!  We are a free society with rights of choice;    and corporate structures are basically serving their profit picture foisting off dangerous, toxic treatments onto people which maim and kill — with out the least proof that any of it works. only their claims  and projections.  It is cruel to demand people go against their inner guide and to do acts which can endanger precious children.

But worse yet is the whole concept of the Doctors whom we are supposed to trust belittling and intimidating those same parents into submission and refusing to be their doctor if they won’t comply (obey). We are all left wondering about the state of modern medicine which seems to have sunk to the level of just one more kinda ‘tacky’ business structure instead of a calling based on “First, do no harm”  More are harmed by medical errors and mishaps including in the hospitals than the top  diseases which are doing most of in.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.  There are legitimate steps one can take to avoid having to go against one’s own principles.  Barbara Lowe Fisher has been at this for decades due to what happened to her own son.  She took action and has been trying to educate others to understand what the choices are — to bring hope and help to others, because she has been there, done that.  Many, many others are out there doing this too, but Ms Fisher has led the way.    This is not a happy subject, but the message is so vital,. .more need to know how to help themselves, a place to get answers to pressing needs.  Listen to it and help protect our little ones.  Jan

Back-to-School Vaccines: Know the Risks and Failures

Girl Dies Within Hours of Common Medical Treatment – Your Child May Be at Risk
Don’t make the mistake of glibly going with the status quo, because the potential consequences can be grave. Make it with total deliberation based on these new facts, despite the controversy it may raise with your doctor. And others. It could even save the life of your loved one.

Isn’t the shell. . it’s ‘desire/striving’

If we can accept that we are in fact, part of – related to this Universe. . . it follows that what we project outwardly to the all,   will be met commensurately, it is simply following natural law.   If we would endure with ‘joy’ expressing appreciation and desire as we go along, we remain part of the flow in which we have engaged.  So it comes from us  .  .  .  we set all those parameters, . .  no right or wrong,. . . no hurry. . .just BE,   JT

It’s not about years. It’s not about age. It’s not about youth. It’s about decline. And decline is about alignment, or not. Decline is about, in this moment, which way am I forking? In this moment, which way am I forking? In this moment, which way am I forking? That’s all it’s about.

Fluoride Conference (important)

August 25, 2014

FAN’s 5th Citizens Conference on Fluoride

September 6-8
Hyatt Regency Hotel, Crystal City, Virginia

The excitement is mounting as we approach the conference – and there is still plenty of time to register! We want to meet you there! See details.

If you want to attend the conference but need a little financial help to do so, or you are willing to share a room at the conference hotel and split the cost with a fellow campaigner, you can email Ellen:

Help! We need volunteers to:

  • Photograph the Conference and Monday’s Lobby Day.
  • Capture footage of our Friday press conference, as well as footage of conference presentations on Saturday and part of Sunday using your own high quality camera. The videographer who volunteers will get a free hotel room for 3 nights.
  • Help at the registration table.
  • Capture audio and video for Clint Griess, who will be streaming parts of this conference for our international supporters. He needs someone with a recording device that can connect directly to a laptop.

New to the Agenda:

  • Henry Rodriguez’s presentation:Why communities of color should be particularly concerned about fluoridation. Henry lives in San Antonio and is with LULAC, Concilio Zapatista 4383, (League of United Latin American Citizens), the oldest and largest Hispanic organization in the US.
  • Just a reminder: Daniel Stockin will be exposing shocking documents obtained from freedom of information requests and other sources that show the true nature of the relationship between CDC, HHS staff, dental groups, and other organizations as they work to halt efforts to end water fluoridation. These documents provide powerful evidence supporting the need for investigative Fluoridegate hearings and are expected to be used in legal cases. You will be stunned to see who is involved and the lengths they have gone to in desperately attempting to counter science-backed criticism of water fluoridation.
  • In addition to the presence of Dr. Joe Mercola, we will have representatives from all the members of his Health Liberty Alliance at the conference on Sunday morning. They are:

-Ronnie Cummins, Founder & Dir, Organic Consumers Union

-Charlie Brown, Dir, Consumers for Dental Choice

-Jeffrey Smith, Founder & Dir, Institute for Responsible Technology

-Barbara Loe Fisher, Founder, National Vaccine Information Center

The timing of this conference couldn’t be better. There is so much good news coming in from around the country and around the world on this issue. Come and meet some of the key players and some of the people fighting this battle in the local trenches. And have fun doing it!

Hope to see you in Crystal City,

Director, Fluoride Action Network

Please carefully rethink SOY

ONE Food Babies and Children should NEVER EAT!

From the HEALING GOURMET, a Vital Message  regarding OUR CHILDREN:

In a previous message, we let you in on one of the dirty secrets of the soy industry – the use of the chemical hexane in the  extraction process.

If you’re eating according to Healing Gourmet’s guidelines, unfermented soy isn’t a food in your diet anyway. But you might be surprised about all the places this cheap protein turns up, including everything from “health food” bars, burritos and smoothies, to sauces, pizzas and other packaged foods.

These foods may send us to an early grave… but where we really should be looking is the cradle.

  • In fact, baby food formulas made from soy (and many of them are) may be one of the worst things we can do for the long-term health of our babies and children.

And even if you don’t have a baby, surely you have grandchildren, nieces, nephews or friends who need the information in this letter. We hope you’ll pass this along to those you care about.

Here are eight reasons why you should NEVER put a baby on soy infant formula:

1. Caustic Chemicals: Soy protein isolate is the primary ingredient in soy formulas. Unless it is listed as organic, this ingredient is treated with caustic hexane.

2. Exposure to GMOs: Almost all soy is genetically modified, which can cause allergies and problems with DNA that we are only beginning to discover. But even if you choose organic soy formula (like Earth’s Best), the issues below still remain as health concerns.

3. Estrogen Exposure: It is estimated that infants fed exclusively soy-based formula receive the estrogenic equivalent (on a bodyweight basis) of FIVE birth control pills… DAILY!

4. Proper Growth & Development: Soy is high in anti-nutrients, known as phytates. These molecules actually block the uptake of essential minerals. For this reason, soy formulas have been known to cause a zinc deficiency in infants. Zinc is essential for normal growth and development.

5. Lower IQ: Soy formulas do not have lactose, which is broken down into glucose and galactose. Galactose is valuable for brain development. Anthropologists have demonstrated that the more intelligent species of mammals have greater amounts of lactose in their milk, and human breast milk contains one of the highest concentrations of lactose. Soy-based formulas contain table sugar and corn syrup instead.

6. Brain Function: Soy formulas lack cholesterol. This is a required ingredient for making myelin – the fatty sheath surrounding nerve fibers. Myelin makes it possible for nerves to carry information from one part of the brain or body to another.

7. Thyroid Function: Soy contains goitrogens. These are chemicals that can impair thyroid function. The thyroid affects weight, metabolism, mood and the functioning of other endocrine organs.

8. Exposure to Heavy Metals: The aluminum content of soy formula is 10 times greater than milk-based formula and 100 times greater than unprocessed milk. The toxic effects of aluminum range from kidney failure in infants to Alzheimer’s in adults.

When it comes to baby food, the breast is always the best (so long as mom is consuming a healthy diet). If someone you love is feeding their baby soy formula, please pass this important information on. You just might save a life or at the very least improve the health of a precious little one.

(Need to state that I agree completely with all the above.  Soy doesn’t cross my thresh-hold, ever, by choice. Which is not to say that I haven’t carelessly allowed it in ignorantly. . . it is so hard attempting to be ‘perfect’.

But I also wanted to add that while it is important to be extra diligent regarding our children for this is our responsibility – – to protect them;   all of this applies to ourselves as well. . . because it isn’t wise to screw around with Mother Nature — it usually gets us in the end.  Many of us, males and females often wonder how our hormonal systems get so wounded and off kilter.  We blame the body or the genes.  (Insult on top of injury!)  But it most generally is our own poor choices due to lack of information.

But there is still one more element to the Soy Saga which is aside from all the harm it does to ALL OF US, is the fact that you and I through our tax dollars at work via BIG AG is subsidizing this entire industry which is growing by leaps and bounds — reaping mega-huge corporate profits  for their already humongous wealth while the small, independent (need I say organic, sustainable and struggling) farmer is lucky to stay alive with no help at all from any faction of government.  These ethical folks just eke out a living while the biggest guys party on our dime.  Where is justice?  equity?  fair play. . . ah well.   .

All have been deceived, with or without labeling as we have been sold a pack of lies. . .soy is good for you.  Soy is an excellent protein source! Soy is a ‘super-food.’    Truth is, it’s right up there with fluoride is healthy and good for you because it is protecting your teeth;  chlorine is protecting your health from all the contaminants in our  water;  sugar is fine – just be moderate with it!    This farmed fish is just the same as non-farmed and you can’t tell the difference.   . . .   .  arrgh!            .  .  watch it old girl, you’re getting wound up, again.   .  OKay,. . .Jan)

So you want a Lemur?

Movie review / Island of Lemurs: Madagascar

Primate primer a pleasure

   Lemurs have impressive dance skills

.   They look like a cartoon come to life, the way they shimmy and gallivant with their gangly limbs.   And the primates’ moves provide some of the most diverting moments of the 3-D Imax film Island of Lemurs: Madagascar.

This bit of “edutainment,” which clocks in at less than 40 minutes, is a collaboration between Imax and Warner Bros., and it turns out to be a slick nature movie with the added cachet of Morgan Freeman’s calming voice.

The technology impressively embraces the audience, putting us in the middle of the rain forest and face to face with curious, beady eyes.

The movie tells the unlikely history of lemurs, which survived the dinosaurs and floated to Madagascar on little rafts of vegetation.

There, they’ve flourished — although man-made fires in their forested habitat have shrunk the numbers of certain species.

There is a subplot involving a lemur specialist, who is trying to save dwindling populations. And there are bits and pieces about their female-centric power structure.   But, really, the movie is about marveling at the incredible adorability — despite those creepy, brightly colored saucer eyes — of lemurs.

Sure, it can teach you more than most of the cat videos that show up in your inbox, but mostly you’ll leave wondering how to get your hands on a pet mouse lemur.

(My Comment:   No question this little ball of fur is adorable,  but somewhere in the back of my mind, an issue or two is trying to come forward — — I’ve heard stuff that wasn’t too positive on the choice of having a lemur as a pet.  Browser-time.    Apparently there are close to 100 varieties  (species) of lemurs.  They aren’t all cute and cuddly and can be as big as a gorilla.   And they don’t all live in Madagascar.   Will try to cull a few more pics and then end up with an answer to what will, no doubt be an oft repeated question from still another site.   Jan)

Can I have a lemur as a pet?

In a word, no. Lemurs are wild animals, not pets. Although they’re cute and furry, you’re much better off with a cat. Not only do you not need the responsibility of taking care of an animal which may be on the Endangered list — if you could find one, which would be a tough task in the first place — but lemur behavior does not make for an ideal pet. Between scent-marking their territory, being very inquisitive (don’t get too attached to those knick-knacks Grandma gave you), and not being housetrainable, the best place for lemurs is in the wild. The next-best place for lemurs is in a facility where trained professionals are working to take care of them and make sure the species live to see another millennium. The worst place… is your living room.

Bladder, Prostate and Kidney

Lack of bladder drainage might cause kidney failure

To Your Good Health
Keith Roach

Q: My primary-care doctor sent me for a blood test and said my prostate-specific antigen number was too high, then sent me to a urologist. The urologist said I am retaining urine in the bladder.
After one week of medication (Rapaflo), I had a catheter inserted for another week. He measured the urine in the bladder at 880 milliliters. Now he is suggesting surgery.
Is he going too fast? What are your thoughts on the procedure and side effects? Will this correct the problem?

A: The bladder is drained via a tube called the urethra, and, in men, the urethra runs right through the middle of the prostate. As men get older, the prostate commonly enlarges (1), and this can cause a resistance to the flow.
Symptoms can range from mildly annoying to completely obstructive. Complete obstruction is an emergency because the kidneys will fail within a few days of being unable to drain urine.

But the obstruction doesn’t need to be complete to cause kidney damage. The high pressure in the urethra, bladder and ureters (the tubes that allow urine to flow from the kidneys to the bladder) causes kidney damage. Placing a catheter allows the
urine to drain at low pressure if the problem is in the urethra.

The normal bladder capacity is 300 to 400 ml. With 880 ml, you would experience abnormal bladder drainage and be at high risk for ongoing kidney damage. Thus, I completely agree with your urologist that something, probably surgical, needs to be done quickly.

It isn’t clear to me whether your inability to drain the bladder is a result of an obstruction from an enlarged prostate, even though an elevated PSA suggests that is the case.  It is also possible that something is wrong with the nerves that go to or from the bladder. I suspect that your urologist has done additional bladder tests to help sort this out.

(My Comment on Q#1:   In  medicine today,Drug companies drive health care practices and they can’t make money on unpatentable natural herbs . . . the emphasis seems to be on what the Medical Complex has lined up on the shelf waiting to be dispensed by way of known pharmaceuticals or specialized ‘treatments’.  The easy, old fashioned,  simple stuff is too ordinary. . . mundane to be considered.  It may be that it will be ‘sorted out,’  whadoyathink?

Why does the prostate “enlarge”?

Meanwhile, lets start with (1) above;  . .the prostate enlarges because, as men get older. . yeah, this is the spot, what often happens is the toxins of the world finally get one’s attention even if one has got away with it for decades.   It is generally a combination of poor or inadequate dietary choices  for any of a variety of reasons. Plus  another subject which finds no favor in the current medical community at all, but extracts huge costs against those who ignore them — parasites of such a wide spectrum and variety, can’t begin to relate it all. I know, it sounds confusing, but it isn’t.  Alternative physicians, also  called ‘functional medicine’ will step right in, testing for metabolic, hormonal status and the presence of parasitic invasion.

Doctor’s Orientation makes a difference

There is access to herbal supplementation bringing immediate relief and over time, restoring complete, normal function without invasive technologies  and costly procedures.  We can try to demand better more practical care from our doctors, but the power structure being what it is, I donno. . .one either sees this stuff or  they don’t – can’t. . .so one needs to seek out doctors who will — can!

Stuff you can do

Let me outline a couple of these alternate possibilities.  First and foremost: clean up your diet,. .  . stop using prepared (by others) anything in boxes, cans or jars. Buy fresh, whole foods, as organic as possible;  indulge your passion for butter, eggs, any meat fish or chicken as long as it is not “farmed” – caged or force fed GMO corn and grains.  Eat the real, old fashioned McCoy.  Use organic dairy,  cheeses and butter — all good.  Never fall victim anymore, to the  70 year old lies  advocated by ‘medicine’ and government ‘authorities’about fat harming you and making one fat!  It doesn’t, eating healthy fats enables one to ‘burn fat’ – pure and simple.  We only have three classes of food-stuff to choose from  and that would be carbs, proteins and fats.

Eat Plenty of good Fats

Healthy Americans were advised to shun fat in all forms because it was said to lead to many disease states, among them Heart disease. . .not true.  Heart and brain require large  reserves of fat for energy for the work they do.  Which is why over the next decade heart disease began to escalate and grow exponentially with every passing decade til it is now epidemic.   But that is the advice we were given and people started eating low-fat everything and no-fat where they could find it.   So America and then the world went on this heart killing diet. But that wasn’t the only lie,.  .  .  cholesterol was another gross untruth which they now want to perpetrate against children;  start feeding drugs to lower their cholesterol while still building bodies.  Not only disturbing, its insane.  Cholesterol is a necessity vital not only to our hearts and brains but required through the body. By limiting our cholesterol, the body’s ability to maintain adequate levels of CoQ-10 is impaired, thus the heart was dealt another blow.  This equates to the necessity to buy maximum amounts of CoQ-10 or Ubiquinol to keep from risking earlier death.

We replaced the Fats with Carbs  (setting-up  new bio-problems)

What do I mean?  People started eating a lot more carbohydrates.  We missed the satisfaction, so our appetites raged on seeking the natural energy once enjoyed, now deemed ‘bad’.  Grains received higher status and usage almost quadrupled.  HFCS was now infused into almost everything.  Grain and sugar consumption soared and continues to do so.   There is no mystery surrounding most of our problems — just nobody wants to look at it. In the Cereal Killer movie we all saw, Donal O’Neill started eating lots of nuts and seeds – pounds and pounds of them and at least 2 dozen or more eggs weekly.. . .so he truly upped his protein — not the CARBS.  He ate copiously  ‘above the ground’ grown vegetables, for fruit he ate freely of all kinds of berries due to the high sugar content in other fruits.  Wound up overcoming his genetic predisposition and boasted the best medical reports his body had ever shown.  Full of energy and very strong.  All that cholesterol floating in his blood stream would stun the average doctor, but it seems that the particles of those molecules are so large and healthy, they can’t be absorbed into the surrounding cells. . .so, no problem.  His prostate is great as well.

Diet for Healthy Prostate

All the above outlined for health is even more important here as have some catching up to do.  The EFA’s are vital (essential fatty acids) and since so important to this health picture, using an oil called MCT oil  (I use this) as this is the more vital part of EFA’s.  Calamari DHA 500 is also excellent.  Pumpkin seeds are high in Zinc – good for prostate as are Sunflower seeds.  These two raw, unroasted seeds are high not only in zinc, but the EFA’s as well.  Dr Jonathan Wright at his  Clinic in Washington  recommends men to ingest a handful or two of these seeds daily as he feels this condition may be a nutritional deficiency. He recommends 90 mg daily broken into three 30 milligram doses til symptoms reside, then lower to 60 mg  and eventually to 30 mg once a day.

Often, men will be given a prescription med from American doctors for finasteride (proscar) which doesn’t work any better than Saw Palmetto, a natural treatment without the side effects of loss of sex drive.  This is thought to stop a cascade oi prostate damaging enzymes that may spark the problem. Saw Palmetto also comes in combination with an extract of Stinging Nettle which enhances Saw Palmetto. Before starting any new procedure, it is important to see a doctor to evaluate and oversee as the specific prostate antigen in a high range can require guidance and successful outcome.

Eliminate soy products as it is detrimental to the hormonal balance in both sexes and seems there is generally an issue with  estrogen, estradiol which cause prostate cells to multiply.  Sorry this is such a long, tedious response, but I have not addressed this specific problem heretofore. And I’m not done, my favorite follows.

Dr  Hulda Clark

My favorite of course, has to be Dr Clark – she of the brilliant, creative mind and a heart as big as all outdoors. She dealt in simple truth and felt that people could take care of themselves beautifully if they just knew what to look for and how to test stuff out to find answers.  No unpronounceable words or frightening prognosis. As I began, I selected an armful of books from my many volumes, I knew before starting, that probably, Dr Clark was all I really needed since I bought her book “The Cure for All Disease” back in 1995 when it was first published.  Best investment ever — hands down. With a little patience, can find almost anything there.

(To begin, let me say that the Index shows more than 20 case histories listed on this subject matter.)  First is a 58 year old man comes to her with gout in both feet and one hand. Could hardly walk his pain was so intense after 7 years.  He also had prostate pain and couldn’t sit comfortably.  Her tests revealed his kidneys were full of uric acid, oxalate and cystine stones.  His prostate was full of Gardnerella and Campylobacter bacteria.  His wisdom teeth were harboring plantar wart #4 virus and Coxsackie B4 virus.  Gsardnerella often comes with fluke parasites and indeed, he had intestinal flukes in his kidney!

He began with the kidney herb program, then the parasite killing program.  It took five months to clear them all.  Then he could walk and sit without pain.

#2 is a 62 yr old male who said his urination had stopped, probably due to kidney stones;  this had occurred before and now he was in a panic.  He started our kidney herb recipe that day and passed 117 stones that same night without bleeding or enough pain to require meds.  Afterwards, he could focus on his prostate enlargement and pain with sitting.  He had intestinal flukes and other stages in his prostate gland as well as in his intestine.  He also had Clonorchis (human liver flukes and their eggs) in his prostate.  He had carbon tetrachloride,  methyl butyl ketone and TC ethylene from food pollution accumulated there too.  After stopping grocery store beverages and killing parasites with a frequency generator, he could urinate normally, freely and without pain.

Q: I have gastroesophageal reflux disease and a hiatal hernia, and have been on Nexium for many years. I had an endoscopy, and the doctor put me on 10 milligrams of Reglan, which I have taken for a couple of years. It does help, but, after reading about the side effects of Reglan (it should be taken for only about 12 weeks), I wonder whether I should continue taking it. My doctor told me the low dosage he prescribed wouldn’t have the side effects.

A: Reglan is used for some people with reflux disease or a hiatal hernia to help the food and acid move forward and not backward into the esophagus.
The dreaded side effect is tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder that usually goes away if the offending drug is stopped immediately but is sometimes permanent. Tardive dyskinesia is more likely with high doses taken for longer periods.
Most people who develop tardive dyskinesia do so after being on metoclopramide (Reglan) for more than a year. It is considered low-risk if given for 12 weeks or less.

Loving scraps better > China imports

Pet-treat ingredients from China? FDA can’t say

WASHINGTON — Sen. Sherrod Brown said he’s worried that pet products labeled as coming from the United States actually contain hazardous ingredients from China.

The concerns stem from reports of the death of 1,000 dogs linked to pet treats made in China.

As of May 1, the FDA has received some 4,800 reports of pet illnesses involving kidney problems, convulsions and gastrointestinal distress. Because of those reports, pet-food chains PetSmart and Petco announced that they plan to stop selling all dog and cat treats made in China.

                                                                                                                      Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio

At a hearing of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China yesterday, Brown grilled officials from the FDA about whether the labeling of so-called “Made in the USA” pet products was accurate. While the United States does not permit raw-chicken imports from China, the USDA last year approved allowing chicken slaughtered elsewhere to be processed in China and then sent to the United States.        (. . .oh, my Gawd. . .Jan)

“While no such chicken has entered our shores yet, it’s possible that very soon this processed chicken could end up on our dinner tables and in our school lunchrooms,” Brown said.

The Ohio Democrat said he’s also concerned that a recent outbreak of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus in the United States might be linked to pet food produced in China.  Shaun Kennedy, an associate professor of veterinary medicine at the University of Minnesota, said food produced in China has been implicated in the outbreak, though it’s still being investigated.

Tracey Forfa, deputy director of the Center for Veterinary Medicine at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, said the FDA continued to investigate the outbreak of canine illnesses. Tests so far have been inconclusive, although the FDA has tested for everything including salmonella, pesticide contamination, antibiotic contamination and mold.

She urged pet owners to consider avoiding the treats. “Eliminating will not harm” pets, she said.

But Brown wondered whether avoidance was enough. He held up a package of dog treats described as made in the United States. “Do you know enough to be able to say all of the ingredients come from the United States?” he asked.

Forfa could not say yes.

“We work very hard to ensure that the American pet-food supply is safe,” she said.

Ex-Im Bank s/b ‘reauthorized’

Joe Nocera commentary:

To eliminate Ex-Im Bank would harm U.S. exporters

Standard & Poor’s issued a short report about Boeing. “Boeing Co. Faces Long-Term Credit Risks If The U.S. Export-Import Bank isn’t Reauthorized,” read the alarming heading.

In dollar volume, Boeing is America’s single largest exporter. It is one of our country’s strongest manufacturers. It employs more than 150,000 people, and last year it sent checks worth $48 billion to some 15,600 subcontractors. In competing with the likes of Europe’s Airbus and Canada’s Bombardier, it takes advantage of loan guarantees and financings offered by the Export-Import Bank — just as those competitors rely on their own export credit agencies for loan guarantees and financings.

    • Without the help it gets from the Ex-Im Bank, Boeing would undoubtedly lose business to those competitors.

And, as S&P was suggesting, it also could see its credit rating lowered if it had to finance and guarantee loans to its airline customers “in order to remain competitive.”

Clearly, S&P did not view this a positive development. Nonetheless, on Monday, The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page — which is among the conservative voices leading the charge against the reauthorization of the Ex-Im Bank — hailed that same S&P report because it also said that, in the short term, Boeing would be able to find financing. Thus has the Ex-Im Bank become the current Rorschach test of American politics.

I am returning to this subject because I continue to find it mind-boggling that anyone in Washington would want to pursue a path that is so clearly destructive to the economy. But that is exactly what is happening.

Conservative organizations like Heritage Action for America and Americans for Prosperity (financed by the Koch brothers) have made killing the Ex-Im Bank their cause. And it has been taken up by Tea Party Republicans in the House, as well as Jeb Hensarling, the powerful chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.

Although it is likely that the Senate will pass a reauthorization bill this month, if the House doesn’t follow suit by the end of September, the Ex-Im Bank will not be reauthorized. Companies that rely on the Ex-Im Bank’s array of financing products to complete deals will, unquestionably, be hurt. Many of them will be small and medium-size companies that are able to export only because of the assistance they get from the Ex-Im Bank.

But some will be big guns like Boeing, Caterpillar and General Electric. It’s worth dwelling on these large companies for two reasons. First, customers of these big companies get the bulk of the Ex-Im Bank’s assistance. Though this seems completely logical — the biggest companies do the biggest deals, after all — this has also made them a target of the right, which views the relationship between the bank and American multinationals as the paradigmatic example of “crony capitalism.”

Second, most of the arguments made against the Ex-Im Bank revolve around its help to the big companies, not the small ones. For instance, it is argued that big companies have their own means of helping customers finance deals. That’s true, but it’s the customers, not the companies, that are pushing for export credit guarantees.

A Boeing source told me that it is hearing from customers and potential customers about the fate of the Ex-Im Bank. “It’s a big deal,” my source said, especially in places like Africa, where conventional financing for aircraft is hard to come by.

“Nobody is saying these companies are going to die if they can’t use the Ex-Im Bank,” said Gary Clyde Hufbauer, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and a member of the Ex-Im Bank’s advisory board. “The issue is their ability to meet their competition.”

Hufbauer ticked off some of the competitors: Siemens of Germany is a huge company that competes with GE; Komatsu of Japan competes with Caterpillar; and, of course, Airbus competes with Boeing. Each of them gets assistance from their own export credit agency, none of which will go away if the U.S. decides not to reauthorize the Ex-Im Bank.

One thing the House Republicans have sought is a commitment from the Treasury Department to lobby for the elimination of export credit agencies around the world. But this is an ideological pipe dream. Other countries have no interest in walking away from export assistance; indeed, countries like China and Japan are far more wedded to this kind of assistance than is the U.S.

In its editorial on Monday, The Journal mocked the phrase “unilateral disarmament” in regards to the Export-Import Bank. But that is what it would be.

There are times when we have to accept the world as it is, rather than how we wish it would be. And like other countries, we ought to be helping our companies get business, and thus increase employment and economic growth — not forcing them to compete with one hand tied behind their backs.

(My Comment:

Again, my apology, for I meant to post this last month when it was run, but it sat in a pile of stuff to be done behind laundry, juicing and other chores . . . you know usual stuff I used to handle in a snap.

This article by Joe Nocera, I felt, is vital and we all need to know coming as it does from his own business background where he has primarily made his mark.  (But, I’m just a fan of his as he has such depth, good judgement and wide variety of interests and I love the way he makes his subject clear for all to understand).

Many are writing about this these days, and as he says, there is quite a push to defeat the re-authorization of the Ex-Im Bank.  Like  others, many of these things are over my head in understanding, but with clear facts and the right presentation. . .I get it.  So once again, Joe Nocera. . . thank you.  Those who DO want prosperity for our country and all in it,  will endeavor to get behind this and use our voice where we can.    Jan)
