Soy – Good/Bad?

Remember I was so impressed with Donna Gates (B.E.D.)  article on “Natto”  that I set about trying to find out how to “ferment” soybeans myself so that I could benefit from it too.   Researching on the internet brought a few sources and one very good tho not specific enough for me article.  If I am going to go to that trouble and smallish expense, I want to be sure that I am in agreement with it, it makes sense and seems plausible.  Still workin on it.   But in my snooping around, I did come across a wonderful article  abstracted from an article written by Sally Fallon together with another expert by the name of  Mary Enig Phd., international expert in the field of lipid chemistry, done back in September, 1995.   Well, I had not read anything like it before,  so here it is.  Well worth your time.

There is a big difference in what one can expect from soy beans depending on what happened to them before they ever hit your plate.  I only wish we could reach the 1ooo’s of babies out there being fed some form of soy in either their formula or other food.  I have learned we cannot change the world, all we can do is hold up our end of it and do what we think best.

CONCERNS REGARDING SOYBEANS

History of Soybeans

Soybeans come to us from the Orient. During the Chou Dynasty (1134-246 BC) the soybean was designated one of the five sacred grains, along with barley, wheat, millet and rice. However, the pictograph for the soybean, which dates from earlier times, indicates that it was not first used as a food; for whereas the pictographs for the other four grains show the seed and stem structure of the plant, the pictograph for the soybean emphasizes the root structure. Agricultural literature of the period speaks frequently of the soybean and its use in crop rotation. Apparently the soy plant was initially used as a method of fixing nitrogen. The soybean did not serve as a food until the discovery of fermentation techniques, sometime during the Chou Dynasty. Thus the first soy foods were fermented products like tempeh, natto, miso and shogu (soy or tamari sauce).

At a later date, possibly in the 2nd century B.C., Chinese scientists discovered that a puree of cooked soybeans could be precipitated with calcium sulfate or magnesium sulfate (plaster of Paris or Epsom salts) to make a smooth pale curd -tofu or bean curd. The use of fermented and precipitated soy products soon spread to other parts of the Orient, notably Japan and Indonesia. Although the highly flavored fermented products have elicited greater interest among scientists and epicures, it is the bland precipitated products that are most frequently used, accounting for approximately 90% of the processed soybeans consumed in Asia today. The increased reliance on bean curd as a source of protein, which occurred between 700 A. D. and the present time, has not necessarily been a beneficial change for the populations of the Orient and Southeast Asia.

Fit for Human Consumption?

The Chinese, did not eat the soybean as they did other pulses (legumes) such as the lentil, because the soybean contains large quantities of a number of harmful a substances. First among them are potent enzyme inhibitors which block the action of trypsin and other enzymes needed for protein digestion.

These”antinutrients” are not completely deactivated during ordinary cooking and can produce serious gastric distress, reduced protein digestion and chronic deficiencies in amino acid uptake. In test animals, diets high in trypsin inhibitors cause enlargement and pathological conditions of the pancreas, including cancer. The soybean also contains hemagglutinin, a clot promoting substance that causes red blood cells to clump together. Trypsin inhibitors and hemagglutinin have been rightly labeled growth depressant substances. Fortunately they are deactivated during the process of fermentation. However, in precipitated products, enzyme inhibitors concentrate in the soaking liquid rather than in the curd. Thus in tofu and bean curd, these enzyme inhibitors are reduced in quantity, but not completely eliminated.

Soybeans are also high in phytic acid or phytates. This is an organic acid, present in the bran or hulls of all seeds, which blocks the uptake of essential minerals-calcium, magnesium, iron and especially zinc-in the intestinal tract. Although not a household word, phytates have been extensively studied. Scientists are in general agreement that grain and legume based diets high in phytates contribute to widespread mineral deficiencies in third world countries.

Analysis shows that calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc are present in the plant foods eaten in these areas, but the high phytate content of soy and rice based diets prevents their absorption. The soybean has a higher phytate content than any other grain or legume that has been studied. Furthermore, it seems to be highly resistant to many phytate reducing techniques such as long, slow cooking. Only a long period of fermentation will significantly reduce the phytate content of soybeans. Thus fermented products such as tempeh and miso provide nourishment that is easily assimilated, but the nutritional value of tofu and bean curd, both high in phytates, is questionable.

When precipitated soy products are consumed with meat, the mineral blocking effects of the phytates are reduced. The Japanese traditionally eat tofu as part of a mineral-rich fish broth. Vegetarians who consume tofu and bean curd as a substitute for meat and dairy products risk severe mineral deficiencies. The results of calcium, magnesium and iron deficiency are well known, those of zinc are less so. Zinc is called the intelligence mineral because it is needed for optimal development and functioning of the brain and nervous system. It plays a role in protein synthesis and collagen formation, it Is involved in the blood sugar control mechanism and thus protects against diabetes; it is needed for a healthy reproductive system.

Zinc is a key component in numerous vital enzymes and plays a role in the immune system. Phytates found in soy products interfere with zinc absorption more completely than with other minerals. Literature extolling soy products tends to minimize the role of zinc in human physiology, and to gloss over the deleterious effect of diets high in phytic acid.

Milk drinking is given as the reason second generation Japanese in America grow taller than their native ancestors. Some investigators postulate that the reduced phytate content of the American diet-whatever maybe its other deficiencies-is the true explanation, pointing out that Asian and Oriental children who do not get enough meat and fish products to counteract the effects of a high phytate diet, frequently suffer rickets, stunting and other growth problems.

Marketing the Soybean

The truth is, however, that most Americans are unlikely to adopt traditional soy products as their principle food. Tofu, bean curd and tempeh have disagreeable texture and are too bland for the Western palate; pungent and tasty miso and natto lose out in taste; only soy sauce enjoys widespread popularity as a condiment. The soy industry has therefore looked for other ways to market the superabundance of soybeans now grown in the United States.

Large scale cultivation of the soybean in the United States began only after the Second World War, and quickly rose to 140 billion pounds per year. Most of the crop is made into animal feed, soy oil for hydrogenated fats margarine and shortening. During the past 20 years, the industry has concentrated on finding markets for the byproducts of soy oil manufacture, including soy “lecithin”, made from the oil sludge, and soy protein products, made from defatted soy flakes, a challenge that has involved overcoming consumer resistance to soy products, generally considered tasteless “poverty” foods.

The quickest way to gain product acceptability in the less affluent society,” said a soy industry spokesman, ” … is to have the product consumed on its own merit in a more affluent society.”” Hence the proliferation of soy products resembling traditional American foods-soy milk for cows milk, soy baby formula, soy yogurt, soy ice cream, soy cheese, soy flour for baking and textured soy protein as meat substitutes, usually promoted as high protein, low-fat, no cholesterol “health foods” to the upscale consumer increasingly concerned about his health. The growth of vegetarianism among the more affluent classes has greatly accelerated the acceptability and use of these artificial products. Unfortunately they pose numerous dangers.

Processing Denatures and Dangers Remain

The production of soy milk is relatively simple. In order to remove as much of the trypsin inhibitor content as possible, the beans are first soaked in an alkaline solution. The pureed solution is then heated to about 115 degrees Centigrade in a pressure cooker. This method destroys most (but not all) of the anti-nutrients but has the unhappy side effect of so denaturing the proteins that they become very difficult to digest and much reduced in effectiveness. The phytate content remains in soy milk to block the uptake of essential minerals. In addition, the alkaline soaking solution produces a carcinogen, lysinealine, and reduces the cystine content, which is already low in the soybean. Lacking cystine, the entire protein complex of the soybean becomes useless unless the diet is fortified with cystine-rich meat, eggs, or dairy products.

Most soy products that imitate traditional American food items, including baby formulas and some brands of soy milk, are made with soy protein isolate, that is the soy protein isolated from the carbohydrate and fatty acid components that naturally occur in the bean. Soy beans are first ground and subjected to high-temperature and solvent extraction processes to remove the oils. The resultant defatted meal is then mixed with an alkaline solution and sugars in a separation process to remove fiber. Then it is precipitated and separated using an acid wash. Finally the resultant curds are neutralized in an alkaline solution and spray dried at high temperatures to produce high protein powder.

This is a highly refined product in which both vitamin and protein quality are compromised-but some trypsin inhibitors remain, even after such extreme refining. Trypsin inhibitor content of soy protein isolate can vary as much as 5-fold. In rats, even low level trypsin inhibitor soy protein isolate feeding results in reduced weight gain compared to controls. Soy product producers are not required to state trypsin inhibitor content on labels, nor even to meet minimum standards, and the public, trained to avoid dietary cholesterol, a substance vital for normal growth and metabolism, has never heard of the potent anti-nutrients found in cholesterol-free soy products.

Soy Formula Is Not the Answer

Soy protein isolate is the main ingredient of soy-based infant formulas. Along with trypsin inhibitors, these formulas have a high phytate content. Use of soy formula has caused zinc deficiency in infants. Aluminum content of soy formula is 10 times greater than milk based formula, and 100 times greater than unprocessed milk. Aluminum has a toxic effect on the kidneys of infants, and has been implicated as cause in Alzheimer’s in adults.

Soy milk formulas are often given to babies with milk allergy; but allergies to soy are almost as common as those to milk. Soy formulas lack cholesterol which is absolutely essential for the development of the brain and nervous system; they also lack lactose and galactose, which play an equally important role in the development of the nervous system. I would strongly discourage the use of soy formulas.

Nitrosamines, which are potent carcinogens, are often found in soy protein foods, and are greatly increased during the high temperature drying process. Not surprisingly, animal feeding studies show a lower weight gain for rats on soy formula than those on whole milk, high-lactose formula; similar results have been observed in children on macrobiotic diets which include the use of soy milk and large amounts of whole grains. Children brought up on high-phytate diets tend to be thin and scrawny.

Fabricated Soy Foods

A final indignity to the original soy bean is high-temperature, high-pressure extrusion processing of soy protein isolate to product textured vegetable protein (TVP). Numerous artificial flavorings, particularly MSG, are added to TVP products to mask their strong “beany” taste, and impart the flavor of meat. Soy protein isolate and textured vegetable protein are used extensively in school lunch programs, commercial baked goods, diet beverages and fast food products. They are heavily promoted in third world countries and form the basis of many food give-away programs. These soy products greatly inhibit zinc and iron absorption; in test animals they cause enlarged organs, particularly the pancreas and thyroid gland, and increased deposition of fatty acids in the liver.

Human feeding tests to determine the cholesterol lowering properties of soy protein isolate have not shown them to be effective. Nevertheless, they are often promoted as having beneficial effects on cholesterol levels.

Cancer Preventing or Cancer Causing?

The food industry also touts soy products for their cancer preventing properties. Isoflavone aglycones are anticarcinogenic substances found in traditionally fermented soybean products. However, in non-fermented soy products such as tofu and soy milk, these isoflavones are present in an altered form as beta-glycoside conjugates, which have no anti-carcinogenic effect. Some researchers believe the rapid increase in liver and pancreatic cancer in Africa is due to the introduction of soy products there.

The fatty acid profile of the soybean includes large amounts of beneficial omega-3 fatty acids compared to other pulses legumes); but these omega-3 fatty acids are particularly susceptible to rancidity when subjected to high pressures and temperatures. This is exactly what is required to remove oil from the bean, as soybean oil is particularly difficult to extract. hexane or other solvents are always used to extract oil from soybeans, and traces remain in the commercial product.

While fermented soy products contain protein, vitamins, anti-carcinogenic substances and important fatty acids, they can under no circumstances be called nutritionally complete. Like all pulses, the soybean lacks vital sulfur-containing amino acids cystine and methionine. These are usually supplied by rice and other grains in areas where the soybean is traditionally consumed. Soy should never be considered as a substitute for animal products like meat or milk. Claims that fermented soy products like tempeh can be relied on as a source of vitamin B12, necessary for healthy blood and nervous system, have not been supported by scientific research.,’ Finally, soybeans do not supply all-important fat soluble vitamins D and preformed A (retinol) which act as catalysts for the proper absorption and utilization of all minerals and water soluble vitamins in the diet.

These “fat soluble activators” are found only in certain animal foods such as organ meats, butter, eggs, fish and shellfish. Carotenes from plant foods and exposure to sunlight are not sufficient to supply the body’s requirements for vitamins A and D. Soy products often replace animal products in third world countries where intake of B12 and fat soluble A and D are already low. Soy products actually increase requirements for vitamins B12 and D.

Are soy products easy to digest, as claimed? Fermented soy products probably are; but unfermented products with their cargo of phytates, enzyme inhibitors, rancid fatty acids and altered proteins most certainly are not. Pet food manufacturers promote soy free dog and cat food as “highly digestible”

Only Fermented Soy Products Are Safe

To summarize, traditional fermented soy products such as miso, natto and tempeh, which are usually made with organically grown soybeans, have a long history of use that is generally beneficial when combined with other elements of the Oriental diet including rice, sea foods, fish broth, organ meats and fermented vegetables. The value of precipitated soybean products is problematical, especially when they form the major source of protein in the diet. Modern soy products including soy milks and artificial meat and dairy products made from soy protein isolate and textured vegetable protein are new to the diet and pose a number of serious problems.

The above information was abstracted from an article written by Sally Fallon and Mary Enig, Ph.D. (an international expert renown in the field of lipid chemistry) for Health Freedom News in September of 1995.

Protein Needs for Blood Type A People

Blood type A people should be nearly vegetarians. The above information should make it clear that you should avoid most soy products unless they are fermented (tempeh and miso). You should not have soy protein or tofu. To obtain optimal protein though you will need to eat about a dozen organic eggs per week, unless you are allergic to them. Try not to eat them on consecutive days. You should also soak your seeds and nuts overnight to deactivate the enzyme inhibitors and phytates. It would be even better if you could continue the process until they sprout which is usually from 2-5 days depending on the temperature and the seeds. You will have to rinse the seeds every 12 hours and let them drain. This will completely deactivate the antinutrients and increase the live enzyme content of the seeds and nuts. The nutritional value will probably increase by 2-300%.

Generally you will need 20 to 35 grams of protein at EACH meal. The following is a list of how many grams of protein there are in one cup of:

pecans 9.9; walnuts 14.8; cashews 24.1;
almonds 26.4; pistachio 26; sunflower 34.8
peanuts 37.7; pumpkin seeds 40.6;

Spirulina has incredible health benefits and is probably one of the main reasons why fish are so healthy for you. It is highly likely you can obtain even more benefits from the Spirulina with none of the complications of heavy metal or pesticide contamination present in nearly all fish. Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that is nearly two-thirds protein. It also has large amounts of chlorophyll and is very valuable to help detoxify the body from heavy metals and radiation. It is also loaded with GLA, which is the main essential fatty acid present in evening primrose or borage oil.

Six tablets contain 2 grams of protein, so you will need approximately 50 tablets if you were to use them as a protein supplement for one meal. I strongly recommend this as a substitute for soy protein. I would try to have at least 4-6 servings per week for anyone who is struggling with chronic illness or looking to optimize their health, especially if they are blood type A.

Natto, fermented soy

Now this is something which I have not fermented,  but after this, I will look into it.  The health benefits sound amazing!        Thank you Donna Gates.

Natto – the little-known food with big benefits for your Heart and Skin

by BodyEcology

  • Haven’t yet tried natto? Body Ecology will explain how this fermented soybean dish from Japan increases all-around wellness and youthfulness, and why you should incorporate it into your diet.
    • If you want beautiful skin, a healthy heart and strong bones, it’s time you try vitamin-rich natto.

Natto is a traditional Japanese dish made from soybeans fermented with Bacillus subtilis1 . Keep in mind that we do not recommend eating soybeans unless they are fermented.

The key element in natto is the fermentation of the soybeans, which make them easier to digest while increasing your body’s ability to absorb nutrients.

Fermented foods and drinks, such as natto, are the cornerstone of the Body Ecology Diet because they are a great source of probiotics.

Natto has a long history as a super food. It has a stringy consistency, strong smell and an acquired taste.

Primarily eaten as a breakfast staple in Japan for over 1,000 years, natto is a great source of protein and is low in calories. But it goes even further to enhance your inner and outer health.

    Natto and Vitamin K

Unlike many foods that are only rich in Vitamin K1, natto is rich in both types of Vitamin K.

Vitamin K1 is found in green leafy vegetables and makes up about 90 per cent of the vitamin K in a typical Western diet. Vitamin K2 isn’t produced in plants, but by various types of bacteria. It makes up only about 10 per cent of Western vitamin K consumption2.

Natto increases the health and strength of your skin, heart and bones.

Here are some of the many health benefits of natto:

    • Natto is especially rich in vitamin K2, which could reduce bone loss in post-menopausal women by as much as 80 per cent3
    • Fermented soybeans such as natto contain Vitamin PQQ, which is very important for the skin. PQQ in human tissues is derived mainly from diet.4
    • Vitamin K is repeatedly shown to reduce blood clots by slowing arterial calcification, enhance liver function and encourage the flow of urine.
    • Vitamin K2 has a better bioavailability that K1. Studies show that this molecule remains in the body for a longer period and is more effective at lower doses, hence is much more bio-effective.5
    • Additionally, natto suppresses immune reactions.6

    Tips for Enjoying Natto

Eating natto as a food is far better than taking the supplement version, which is less potent and less effective. You can find it at Asian markets and some health food stores.

While fermented foods and drinks all have an acquired taste, natto may take more time to get used to than cultured vegetables or probiotic liquids. But the taste is definitely worth acquiring!

When you take the natto out of its package, pour it into a bowl and, using a fork, whip it about 50 times until it gets kind of foamy. In Japan, natto is commonly served over rice but instead, we recommend you add: plenty of cultured vegetables, mustard (made with apple cider vinegar), wheat free tamari, scallions and if you like, a little wasabi.

Even if you’ve experienced soy allergies, natto may not bother you.  The fermentation process breaks down the difficult-to-digest proteins that many are sensitive to, rendering them unrecognizable as a problem food to your immune system!

Now that you know the vitality secret the Japanese have know for a thousand years, make fermented foods and drinks, like natto, part of YOUR diet today.

    Dr/Mom on vaccinations

Dr Dolly is a remarkable Doctor/Mom whom I discovered back in June and meant  to tell everyone about.  She is bright as a new penny and the last word as a pediatrician.  And we just happen to be in total agreement about vaccinating babies and messing around with mother nature.  Hope you enjoy this as much as I did.  (I got her permission)

    Health Happy Round-Up: Vaccine Awareness

Posted on June 12, 2009 by Dr. Dolly Garnecki

j0433218Welcome to a weekly series on Traveling with Baby, Health Happy Round-Up which focuses on multiple aspects of wholesome living and optimal health for the entire family.  Each weekend, Traveling with Baby will share some insightful news, recipes, and tips to help you consider fresh new perspectives on wholesome and happy health.  If there’s a topic or recipe you’d like featured on Health Happy Round-Up, let me know!  [drgarnecki at gmail dot com].

    ____________________________________________________________

j0321155As a doctor mom, I’ve often been asked whether or not my husband and I have chosen to vaccinate our son.

The short answer to that question is no.

I have several colleagues who will pat me on the back, give me a high five, and say, “Amen, sister!”  On the other hand, I have family members, and many other friends who look at me in aghast as though I’ve chosen to do something utterly maniacal and drastic for my son (these are the same people who balked when I announced I was having a home birth).

Usually, when pressed, I quickly summarize my reasons for avoiding childhood vaccinations, but there’s typically not much time to elaborate on the research, statistics, and evidence to which my husband and I stand fast on our decision.  I’ll delve a little deeper into the why behind our decision.  I think whether or not to vaccinate children is a decision that should be made by the parents (not the government).

I fully support any parents’ decision, but if the topic comes up, I will calmly and gently present information supporting reasons to avoid vaccinations.  I encourage all parents to read thoroughly on both sides of the issue before settling on a decision.

Choosing to not vaccinate is not for the faint of heart

On another note, it’s easy to get your child vaccinated.  Any pediatrician will willingly vaccinate your child beginning at 6 weeks of age.  On the other hand, you may have to fight tooth and nail to prevent your child from being vaccinated.

I have a colleague, also a doctor, whose Florida pediatrician threatened to have their children taken away from them for opting not to vaccinate them without  obtaining religious exemption from the local government.

    Why bother NOT vaccinating children?

For the first time in history, U.S. [and Canadian] children are sicker than the generation before them. They’re not just a little worse off, they are precipitously worse off physically, emotionally, educationally and developmentally. The statistics have been repeated so often, they are almost boring.

Obesity affects nearly a fifth of children, triple the prevalence in 1980. Juvenile diabetes is up 104% since 1980. Autism, once regarded as having a purely genetic etiology, increased more than a thousandfold in less than a generation. The incidence of asthma is up nearly 75%. Life-threatening food allergies doubled in the past decade. The prevalence of allergies increased nearly sixfold. Almost one in 10 children—between four and five million kids—have been diagnosed with attention-deficit disorder. Nutrient deficiencies, not seen for decades in U.S. children, are prevalent again, or still persisting.

    What happened?

Many have argued that the increasingly aggressive vaccination schedule is partly to blame. In the 1980s, more vaccines were given earlier in infancy, as were more multivalent doses, most of which contained mercury…. If true, by vaccinating so zealously, rather than making children healthier, as school districts, federal health programs, corporate health infrastructures, and pediatricians insist, we have traded mostly benign or treatable childhood illnesses for incurable, lifelong, extremely costly disability and disease. It means that current vaccine policy and practice create more morbidity and mortality than they prevent in U.S. [and Canadian] children.

(Source: Why Do Pediatricians Deny The Obvious? By Judy Converse, MPH, RD, LD)

According to the CDC and a summarized report by Lisa Killinger, Doctor of Chiropractic, children received only 4 vaccinations in the 1980’s.  However, only five years ago, 10 million vaccines were administered per year in the U.S.  Most of them were given to infants ages 2 – 6 months of age.  Over 75 percent of all 3-year-olds in the U.S. were fully vaccinated, according to the CDC’s recommended schedule.  By the age of two, healthy infants in the U.S. receive up to 20 vaccinations to protect against 11 diseases.

In 2007, the CDC recommended schedule increased for two year-olds to receive 35 vaccinations to protect against 15 diseases.

Visit the CDC for a list of the most current vaccine schedule and state law requirements database.

Vaccines tamper with natural immunity causing serious consequences

The body has normal mechanisms for defense, but by injecting particles of infectious diseases directly into the bloodstream, the immune system’s first line of defense (Th1) is bypassed.  When Th1 is circomvented, the result is a “surprise attack” on the second line of defense, called Th2.  The antibodies created from going directly to Th2 is so distressing to the body, it can result in anaphylactic shock.

Naturally occurring diseases are introduced into the body through the nose, mouth, skin and lungs, triggering a the Th1 level that usually combats the illness before it ever reaches the bloodstream. However, the repeated “back-door surprise attacks” on the Th2 level of the immune system from vaccinations make the body’s immune system hypersensitive.  The body reacts inappropriately to other normally harmless substances like peanuts.  The persistent onslaught against immune defense results in a modern generation of children whose immune systems are damaged. They suffer from food and environmental allergies, childhood asthma, and there is an increasing number who have life threatening anaphylactic disorders.

    Vaccine ingredients

Aborted human fetal tissue is harvested and used as the precursor to cell lines grown for more and more vaccines.

Vaccines are cultured in tissues such as monkey kidney cells, rabbit and dog brains, horse blood, fetal calf blood, chick embryos, and, yes, even human fetal lung tissue. Under normal circumstances, the body only encounters foreign animal proteins though the digestive tract; when injected directly into the blood stream, these proteins can wreak havoc on the body.

Vaccines may contain unintentional animal viruses. It is impossible to completely isolate one virus from others within the animal tissue used for vaccine creation. As a result, vaccines pose the greatest risk of cross-species disease introduction; past vaccine batches have contained unwanted animal
viruses. There is even evidence that the AIDS virus was spread from apes to humans through a contaminated oral polio vaccine given to over 300,000 Africans. Since then, other vaccine batches have accidentally included mysterious animal viruses, one of which is SV40, which some scientists link to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and certain brain tumours in the Baby Boomer generation.

The chemicals added as preservatives and adjuvants (intended to make them more powerful) to vaccines are dangerous; they include formaldehyde, aluminum phosphate, phenol (carbolic acid), alum, acetone, and some still do contain Thimerosal (a preservative comprising 50% ethyl mercury). Many of these chemicals are neurotoxic and lead to a myriad of other health issues; they have been linked to autism, Attention Deficit Disorder, and other developmental disorders. These toxins build up in the system over time; heavy metals do not leave the system once they’ve crossed the blood-brain barrier.  The medical community argues that “there is no conclusive evidence” linking vaccines with these disorders because they choose to reference scientifically flawed studies sponsored by the pharmaceutical companies themselves or refuse to undertake long term studies to compare the overall health outcome of fully vaccinated groups with non-vaccinated ones. Common sense dictates that injecting toxic chemicals into the bodies of neurologically immature babies is dangerous. (Note: the flu shot still contains mercury.) (source: http://www.vran.org)

    Don’t vaccines prevent disease?

According to historical trends supported by research, the positive effect of vaccines has been minimal.

Deaths caused by childhood illnesses had already declined as much as 98% before vaccine programs were ever initiated. Evidence indicates that an improved standard of living, particularly access to fresh foods (and education on hygiene and sanitization), caused this drop in disease, not vaccines. Evidence also indicates that statistical tampering over the last sixty years has made vaccines appear more effective than they truly are.

    Natural Immunity, not Promiscuity

The vaccine schedule delivers multiple doses of diseased animal/human organ tissue in high doses in conjunction with harmful toxins and carcinogens.  Historically, when people did contract various diseases, it was one disease at a time, if in fact they did get multiple diseases over the course of a lifetime.

A body’s immune system is designed to create anti-bodies in response to a disease, and to fight and fend off an attack on healthy cells.  However, when multiple diseases are thrown at it all at once (in conjunction with toxins, heavy metals, and carcinogens), the body’s response capability is severely handicapped by reacting and performing in hyper-drive all the time, and irreversible damage occurs.

It is not a natural occurrence to get 4 major diseases at once, yet that is how the immunization schedule is ordered…by the time your child is 6 weeks old.

There are vaccines for diseases that can only be contracted through sexual promiscuity (such as Hepatitis B).  I do not encourage nor do I expect my son to be engaged in that type of behavior.  Straight from the Virginia religious exemption form,

The Hepatitis-B vaccine protects against a disease that is only transmitted through multiple sexual partners or street IV drug users, and therefore usurps my parental authority to condemn such activity in my child.  The acceptance of this vaccine promotes sexual promiscuity and immoral behavior in direct contradiction to the teachings of our faith.

Personally, I’d rather my son take his chances fending off a childhood disease like measles with his healthy immune system than subject himself to a lifetime of disease and disability from the crippling side effects that can occur from vaccines.

    My story

Like most children born in the 1970’s, I received immunizations.  I have a story about a whole cell pertussis (DTP) booster shot taken in the buttocks at age 5 (even at that age, it was utterly humiliating).  For two weeks afterward, I could not walk.  My gluteal (buttocks) and hamstring muscles would seize up and spasm when I’d sit or lie down for long periods of time.  Eventually, it wore off, but as a result my right leg and foot continued to turn inward for several more years of childhood and into adolescence which affected my walking patterns and posture.

As an adult, I joined the U.S. military.  If you’re not current on immunizations, you’ll get them all at once in the medical processing station.  If you do not provide a record of your immunizations, they will give you everything at once.  Everything that is currently part of the CDC’s immunization schedule.

I won’t delve into the long military history of the U.S. government testing drugs and vaccines on its soldiers, because that’s not the point of this article.  I will mention that while I was on active duty, some drug testing was optional and some vaccinations were mandatory (all the anthrax series, and smallpox).  I had adverse skin reactions to anthrax as well as flu shots (also required every year for all active duty military personnel).  Every time I got the flu shot, I ended up with the flu or a very bad cold in addition to an intense skin rash that would span 3/4 of my body.  I had to take steroids to counter the rash due to the vaccination that was supposed to prevent the flu.

Although all military medical personnel denied there could be any side effects from the flu shot (I argued it was most likely the aluminum, mercury, and formaldehyde that my body was so aggressively rejecting), I knew there was nothing new in my diet, environmental exposure, or laundry detergent that was suspect.  I was able to request testing for an allergic reaction which prevented me from getting the flu shot one year.  Before they could schedule me for testing, flu season was suddenly over.  While numerous co-workers who received the flu shot were taking several sick days off work to deal with the horrendous cold virus they suddenly got, I spent the flu season healthy and free of illness.  To this day, I will never ever get another flu shot again.

One day, my son may choose to serve his country in the military.  If that day arrives, he’ll no longer have the option of claiming exemption from vaccinations.  I hope, for the sake of all military personnel serving our country and risking their lives in combat, that the government and CDC will learn to accept the evidence that immunizations cause more damage and disease than they prevent.  I hope that vaccines will be optional for military personnel in the near future.

For now, we’ll do our part to keep our family safe and share information with others who are willing to listen.

    Evidence

j0313931It’s moving, if not heartbreaking, to listen to testimonials of families who saw changes in their children once they were vaccinated.  Similarly, it’s joyful to hear triumphant stories of healthy adults who’ve seldom been ill and who never had vaccines as children.

But in today’s post-modern world, most folks want cold, hard facts.  Vacinne911 has provided a list of medical journals, categorized by disease, that link the cause to vaccines in pdf format (courtesy of mercola.com).  The medical journals indicate that vaccines are linked to such diseases and medical conditions as leukemia, lymphoma, epilepsy, seizures, auto-immune disease, diabetes, autism, convulsions, brain swelling, deafness, various organ disorders, and death.

For a cursory post on vaccine ingredients, read What’s in Childhood Vaccines? and the post that links to a video where CDC chief admits that vaccines are linked to autism.

If you have questions or concerns, check the resources above, check with your child’s health care provider about your options, and as always, you can e-mail me (drgarnecki at gmail dot com).

What choice has your family made in regard to childhood vaccinations?  What influenced your decision?

    Abraham – on ‘hard work’

If you believe that you must work hard in order to deserve the money that comes to you, then money cannot come to you unless you do work hard. Financial success, or any other kind of success, does not require hard work. It does require alignment of thought. You simply cannot offer negative thought about things that you desire and then make up for it with action or hard work. When you learn to direct your own thoughts, you will discover the true leverage of Energy alignment.

    Fix Restless Leg Syndrome w/EFT

Filed under: Pain,Restless leg syndrome — Jan Turner @ 11:46 am

To Donna and anyone else who suffers from Restless Leg Syndrome, I wanted to follow thru with this terrific letter from Linda Stettler who is especially efficient in this area as a therapist.   (Donna was a commenter to a post of mine having to do with FDA considering removal or altering dosage levels with acetaminophen).   Since I don’t know to what extent you have really checked out EFT, I am  (Mother-hen that I am) hammering down on you with this because I really would like you to have relief – and if possible, not damage your liver and kidneys while attaining that relief.    You or anyone else wanting that relief, and not knowing beans about this stuff, may be utterly confused by the glyphs which follow in her description.  She is after all writing to the family of EFT’ers who already USE EFT in their life and are familiar with the terms.   Therefore,  following the article, I am attempting to include a simple page or so which explains the tapping points i.e. K.C. = Karate chop,   EB = Eyebrow,  UE = Under Eye,  and so on.  All of this , of course is totally free and available to anyone who wants it – just go to the EFT site  http://www. emofree.com  and download it.

Here’s to your freedom from pain and the misery of your problems.              Jan

Two ways to use EFT for Restless Leg Syndrome

    Hi Everyone,

Linda Stettler, one of our experienced EFT therapists, shows us two ways she uses EFT to get immediate relief for her bouts of Restless Leg Syndrome. Please consult physicians on all medical issues.

    Hugs, Gary

    By Linda Stettler

Many people suffer from Restless Leg Syndrome. Most of us experience it in the evenings while trying to go to sleep. Some folks, like my sister in law, experience it while flying. When it occurs, it is quite uncomfortable and disturbing.

There are a variety of symptoms that people report, but the bottom line is that you experience unpleasant feelings in your legs? Let me be clear, I am not an MD and I do not have any idea what causes this condition. I only know that when I get it, I eliminate it very quickly and very easily with EFT.

When Restless Leg symptoms come up for me, it is always while trying to go to sleep. On an intensity scale, measuring discomfort, it is generally between an 8 and a 10. One to two rounds of EFT is all that I need in order to completely eliminate it.

There are two approaches I have used to clear this up (Long and Short). I’ll share both with you.

    1. Long Version

“Even though I have this uncomfortable feeling in my mid calf, ankle and foot of my right leg (be specific to where you are feeling it), I deeply and completely love and accept my body and my leg, just as it is. ”

“Even though I can’t stand this and it feels like it is going to make me go crazy, I trust that the wisdom of my body knows how to bring my body back to balance and comfort.”

“Even though this feels awful, I know my leg is in the process of returning to comfort and well being.”

1st Round: Tap about 10 taps on each point while focusing on the specific sensations you are feeling, while saying or thinking, “releasing this (describe specific) sensation.”

I usually use all the tapping points, including the finger points and the inside of the wrist and ending with the top of the hand (gamut spot).

Top of Head, EB, SE, UE, UN, UL, CB, UA, Th, IF, MF, BF, Inside wrist, top of hand (gamut spot).

2nd Round: Tap about 10 taps – Top of Head through BF points, thinking or speaking “Releasing the remainder of these (remaining specific) sensations.”

Then tap on Side Hand (Karate Chop Point), Inside Wrist, Top of Hand (Gamut Spot) thinking/speaking “Body returning to comfort and balance.”

At the end of these two sequences, I have absolutely no symptoms remaining. And I just drift gratefully off to sleep. If you do this and you are not completely relieved, you can do another couple rounds. That should do the trick. If not, you might want to work with a practitioner who will point you in the direction of a few more access paths to what is triggering the condition. But, most of the time, this is not necessary for complete relief.

    2. Short Version

Focus your attention on (Be With) the specific sensations and specific location of the sensations. And just start tapping – 10 to 20 taps each. Start with the Side of Hand (Karate Chop Point), Top of Head, EB, SE, UE, UN, UL, CB, UA, Th, IF, MF, BF, Inside wrist, top of hand (gamut spot). You don’t need to have any verbiage at all. Just tap 2 or 3 rounds while focusing on the specific sensations, until they are gone. This version works for me 80% of the time.

I felt inspired to write this report this afternoon after noticing an advertisement on TV for the latest cure all drug. It is a drug to relieve Restless Leg Syndrome. It seems you take a pill and after about 7 days you start to feel relief. And I thought to myself. Why wait 7 days? You can relieve this in 2 or 3 minutes, easily, elegantly, quickly, and permanently with EFT.

(As promised, here are the pages from the manual:)

-An end run around diagnosis. However, you don’t have to know anything about diagnosis to have success with EFT. This is my contribution to these discoveries. EFT creates an effective end run around diagnosis. This is not to say that the ability to diagnose is unimportant. In fact, I teach an elegant version of diagnosis in our DVD set, “Steps toward becoming The Ultimate Therapist.” Professional therapists, especially those dealing with clinically disturbed patients, will want to go this extra step.
-However, the “100% overhaul concept” (described next) works admirably as a substitute. Diagnosis is not necessary for the majority of issues with the majority of people.

    The 100% overhaul concept

-To understand how this end run works, let’s go back to our TV set analogy. Suppose your TV picture is fuzzy….there is a “zzzzzt” somewhere inside….and you want it repaired. Now suppose further that your TV repairman has no tools with which to diagnose the problem. He has no way of telling whether you need something major like a new picture tube or something minor like a new capacitor. How then, does he repair your TV?
-Here’s the answer: In order to fix your TV…he overhauls the whole thing–just as an auto mechanic might overhaul an entire engine. He replaces every electronic gizmo in sight….the picture tube, the resistors, all the wires, every capacitor, etc. Is he overdoing it a bit? Oh sure!. But the important question is, “Is he likely to fix the problem?” Oh sure again! In fact, since he is replacing everything, his odds approach 100%.
-Of course the overhaul will be of limited help if the TV is located in a poor reception area where interference is present. But that’s usually not the case. By the same token, a few people (less than 5%) have energy systems that are subject to substantial interference by allergic type reactions. We will discuss more on this topic later.

-The Basic Recipe. The 100% overhaul concept is EFT’s end run around diagnosis. We overdo it. We use a memorized process called The Basic Recipe with which we apply enough tapping procedures to overhaul the whole energy system. This way, our odds of fixing the specific energy imbalance, or “zzzzzt,” are greatly enhanced….even though we have no ability to diagnose.
-The only difference between the TV repairman and EFT is that our overhaul takes only a few minutes…..not days. Therefore it is very practical to do.
-The 100% overhaul concept requires that you tap near the end points of numerous energy meridians without knowing which of them may be disrupted. In this way you “overtap” and will, in the process, tap on some energy meridians that are flowing normally. You might wonder if this does any harm. The answer is no. Thus “overtapping”, as EFT requires, has the same effect as overhauling a TV set. No harm done….and you’ll probably fix what’s wrong.
-Summary so far. To this point we have covered some basic background and discussed what to expect. We have also developed the science behind the techniques and have learned that, “The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.” This is a radically new discovery and requires thinking outside the normal boundaries to be truly appreciated.
-We also learned that diagnosing for energy imbalances can be important but is impractical, and unnecessary, to teach in this course. Fortunately, diagnosis can be avoided in a great majority of cases by using the 100% overhaul concept.
-The 100% overhaul concept requires a memorized tapping procedure. This procedure is the centerpiece of EFT and is referred to as The Basic Recipe. It is your primary tool and “best friend” for emotional freedom. You now have the necessary background to appreciate its power. We cover it next.
P.S. As a reminder, please recall from our opening comments that the emotional and energetic releases brought about by EFT frequently result in profound physical healings.

    The Basic Recipe

Like Baking a Cake — The Setup
The Sequence — 9 Gamut Procedure — The Sequence (again)
The Reminder Phrase — Adjustments for Subsequent Rounds
    Like Baking a Cake

-Our end goal in this course is to equip you with an easy to use recipe for expanding your emotional freedom. I call it The Basic Recipe and the pages that follow are dedicated to its development.

    cake

-A recipe, of course, has certain ingredients which must be added in a certain order. If you are baking a cake, for example, you must use sugar instead of pepper and you must add the sugar before you put it in the oven.
    Otherwise….no cake.
-The Basic Recipe is no exception. Each ingredient must be performed precisely as described and they must be introduced in the proper order. Otherwise….no result.
-Although I am going to some length to describe it in detail, The Basic Recipe is very simple and easy to do. Once memorized, each round of it can be performed in about 1 minute. It will take some practice, of course, but after a few tries the whole process becomes familiar and you can bake that emotional freedom cake in your sleep. You will then be well on your way to mastery of EFT and all the rewards it provides.
-Let me interject here that various shortcuts are available and described in Part II of this manual and on Video #1 of Part II. I am describing the full Basic Recipe here because it provides an important foundation to the whole process. However, the proficient practitioner may want to use the shortcuts because they cut the average time involved by at least half.
-The full Basic Recipe consists of four ingredients…two of which are identical. They are:

    1. The Setup
    2. The Sequence
    3. The 9 Gamut Procedure
    4. The Sequence

    -
They are each treated in detail below.

    Ingredient #1…The Setup

-Applying The Basic Recipe is something like going bowling. In bowling, there is a machine that sets up the pins by picking them up and arranging them in perfect order at the end of the alley. Once this “setup” is done, all you need to do is roll the ball down the alley to knock over the pins.
-In a similar manner, The Basic Recipe has a beginning routine to “set up” your energy system as though it was a set of bowling pins. This routine (called The Setup) is vital to the whole process and prepares the energy system so that the rest of The Basic Recipe (the ball) can do its job.
-Your energy system, of course, is not really a set of bowling pins. It is a set of subtle electric circuits. I present this bowling analogy only to give you a sense for the purpose of The Setup and the need to…make sure your energy system is properly oriented before attempting to remove its disruptions.
-Your energy system is subject to a form of electrical interference which can block the balancing effect of these tapping procedures. When present, this interfering blockage must be removed or The Basic Recipe will not work. Removing it is the job of The Setup.
-Technically speaking, this interfering blockage takes the form of a polarity reversal within your energy system. This is not the same thing as the energy disruptions which cause your negative emotions.
-Another analogy may help us here. Consider a typical hand held electronic device such as a tape recorder. Like all such devices, it needs batteries to work and, equally important, the batteries must be installed properly. You’ve noticed, I’m sure, that batteries have + and – marks on them. Those marks indicate their polarity. If you line up those + and -marks according to the instructions, then the electricity flows normally and your tape recorder works fine.

    21

    battery

-But what happens if you put the batteries in backwards? Try it sometime. The tape recorder will not work. It acts as if the batteries have been removed. That’s what happens when polarity reversal is present in your energy system. It’s like your batteries are in backwards. I don’t mean you stop working altogether….like turn “toes up” and die….but your progress does become arrested in some areas.
-This polarity reversal has an official name. It is called Psychological Reversal and represents a fascinating discovery with wide ranging applications in…all areas of healing and personal performance.
-It is the reason why some diseases are chronic and respond very poorly to conventional treatments. It is also the reason why some people have such a difficult time losing weight or giving up addictive substances. It is, quite literally, the cause of self sabotage. An entire course could be dedicated to its uses and it is covered in detail in Part II of this course.
-For now, however, we need only know some foundational things about Psychological Reversal that apply to EFT and…more importantly…how to correct it.
-Psychological Reversal is caused by self defeating, negative thinking which often occurs subconsciously and thus outside of your awareness. On average, it will be present…and thus hinder EFT…about 40% of the time. Some people have very little of it (this is rare) while others are beset by it most of the time (this also is rare). Most people fall somewhere in between these two extremes. It doesn’t create any feelings within you so you won’t know if it is present or not. Even the most positive people are subject to it….including yours truly.
-When it is present it will stop any attempt at healing, including EFT, dead in its tracks. Therefore…It must be corrected if the rest of The Basic Recipe is going to work.
-Being true to the 100% overhaul concept we correct for Psychological Reversal even though it might not be present. It only takes 8 or 10 seconds to do and, if it isn’t present, no harm is done. If it is present, however, a major impediment to your success will be out of the way.

-That being said, here’s how The Setup works. There are two parts to it…

    1. You repeat an affirmation 3 times while you…
    2. Rub the “Sore Spot” or, alternatively, tap the “Karate Chop” point (these will be explained shortly).

    The Affirmation

-Since the cause of Psychological Reversal involves negative thinking it should be no surprise that the correction for it includes a neutralizing affirmation. Such is the case and here it is.

Even though I have this _____________, I deeply and completely accept myself.

-The blank is filled in with a brief description of the problem you want to address. Here are some examples.

**Even though I have this fear of public speaking, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I have this headache, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I have this anger towards my father, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I have this war memory, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I have this stiffness in my neck, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I have these nightmares, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I have this craving for alcohol, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I have this fear of snakes, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I have this depression, I deeply and completely accept myself.

-This is only a partial list, of course, because the possible issues that are addressable by EFT are endless. Please note that in the videos and audios included with this course, Adrienne and I apply various forms of this affirmation. You may hear us use affirmations like…

    22

**”I accept myself even though I have this _________.”
    or
**”Even though I have this ____________, I deeply and profoundly accept myself.”
    or
**”I love and accept myself even though I have this_______________.”

-All of these affirmations are correct because they follow the same general format. That is….they acknowledge the problem and create self acceptance despite the existence of the problem. That is what’s necessary for the affirmation to be effective. You can use any of them but I suggest you use the recommended one because it is easily memorizable and has a good track record at getting the job done.
-Now here are some interesting points about the affirmation…

**It doesn’t matter whether you believe the affirmation or not….just say it. **It is better to say it with feeling and emphasis but saying it routinely will usually do the job. **It is best to say it out loud but if you are in a social situation where you prefer to mutter it under your breath….or do it silently….then go ahead. It will probably be effective.

-To add to the effectiveness of the affirmation, The Setup also includes the simultaneous rubbing of a “Sore Spot”….or….tapping on the “Karate Chop” point. They are described next.

    The Sore Spot

-There are two Sore Spots and it doesn’t matter which one you use. They are located in the upper left and right portions of the chest and you find them as follows:
-Go to the base of the throat about where a man would knot his tie. Poke around in this area and you will find a U shaped notch at the top of your sternum (breastbone). From the top of that notch go down 3 inches toward your navel and over 3 inches to your left (or right). You should now be in the upper left (or right) portion of your chest. If you press vigorously in that area (within a 2 inch radius) you will find a “Sore Spot.” This is the place you will

    sore spot

need to rub while saying the affirmation.
-This spot is sore when you rub it vigorously because lymphatic congestion occurs there. When you rub it, you are dispersing that congestion. Fortunately, after a few episodes the congestion is all dispersed and the soreness goes away. Then you can rub it with no discomfort whatsoever.
-I don’t mean to overplay the soreness you may feel. It’s not like you will have massive, intense pain by rubbing this Sore Spot. It is certainly bearable and should cause no undue discomfort. If it does, then lighten up your pressure a little.
-Also, if you’ve had some kind of operation in that area of the chest or if there’s any medical reason whatsoever why you shouldn’t be probing around in that specific area then switch to the other side. Both sides are equally effective. In any case, if there is any doubt, consult your health practitioner before proceeding….or….tap the “Karate Chop” point instead.

    The Karate Chop Point

    karate chop point

-The Karate Chop point (abbreviated KC) is located at the center of the fleshy part of the outside of your hand (either hand) between the top of the wrist and the base of the baby finger or….stated differently….the part of your hand you would use to deliver a karate chop.

-Instead of rubbing it as you would the Sore Spot, you vigorously tap the Karate Chop point with the fingertips of the index finger and middle finger of the other hand. While you could use the Karate Chop point of either hand, it is usually most convenient to tap the Karate Chop point of the non-dominant hand with the two fingertips of the dominant hand. If you are right handed, for example, you would tap the Karate Chop point on

    23

the left hand with the fingertips of the right hand.

-Should you use the Sore Spot or the Karate Chop point? After years of experience with both methods, it has been determined that rubbing the Sore Spot is a bit more effective than tapping the Karate Chop point. It doesn’t have a commanding lead by any means but it is preferred.
-Because The Setup is so important in clearing the way for the rest of The Basic Recipe to work, I urge you to use the Sore Spot rather than the Karate Chop point. It puts the odds a little more in your favor. However, the Karate Chop point is perfectly useful and will clear out any interfering blockage in the vast majority of cases. So feel free to use it if the Sore Spot is inappropriate for any reason.
-You will notice on the videos that I often instruct people to tap the Karate Chop point instead of rub the Sore Spot. That’s because it is easier to teach when I’m on stage.

    Stepping Through It

-Now that you understand the parts to The Setup, performing it is easy. You create a word or short phrase to fill in the blank in the affirmation and then…simply repeat the affirmation, with emphasis, 3 times while continuously rubbing the Sore Spot or tapping the Karate Chop point.
-That’s it. After a few practice rounds, you should be able to perform The Setup in 8 seconds or so. Now, with The Setup properly performed, you are ready for the next ingredient in The Basic Recipe….The Sequence.

    Ingredient #2…The Sequence

-The Sequence is very simple in concept. It involves tapping on the end points of the major energy meridians in the body and is the method by which the “zzzzzt” in the energy system is balanced out. Before locating these points for you, however, you need a few tips on how to carry out the tapping process.
-Tapping tips: You can tap with either hand but it is usually more convenient to do so with your dominant hand (e.g. right hand if you are right handed).
-Tap with the fingertips of your index finger and middle finger. This covers a little larger area than just tapping

with one fingertip and allows you to cover the tapping points more easily.
-Tap solidly but never so hard as to hurt or bruise yourself.
Tap about 7 times on each of the tapping points. I say about 7 times because you will be repeating a “reminder phrase” (covered later) while tapping and it will be difficult to count at the same time. If you are a little over or a little under 7 (5 to 9, for example) that will be sufficient.
-Most of the tapping points exist on either side of the body. It doesn’t matter which side you use nor does it matter if you switch sides during The Sequence. For example, you can tap under your right eye and, later in The Sequence, tap under your left arm.

-The points: Each energy meridian has two end points. For the purposes of The Basic Recipe, you need only tap on one end to balance out any disruptions that may exist in it. These end points are near the surface of the body and are thus more readily accessed than other points along the meridians that may be more deeply buried. What follows are instructions on how to locate the end points of those meridians that are important to The Basic Recipe. Taken together….and done in the order presented….they form The Sequence.

    points

**At the beginning of the eyebrow, just above
    and to one side of
    the nose. This point
    is abbreviated EB
    for beginning of the
    EyeBrow.

    **On the bone
    bordering the
    outside corner of
the eye. This point is abbreviated SE for Side of the Eye.

**On the bone under an eye about 1 inch below
your pupil. This point is abbreviated UE for
    Under the Eye.

**On the small area between the bottom of your nose and the top of your upper lip. This point is abbreviated UN for Under the Nose.

    24

**Midway between the point of your chin and the bottom of your lower lip. Even though it is not directly on the point of the chin, we call it the chin point because it is descriptive enough for people to understand easily. This point is abbreviated Ch for Chin.

**The junction where the sternum (breastbone), collarbone and the first rib meet. To locate it, first place your forefinger on the U-shaped notch at the top of the breastbone (about where a man would knot his tie). From the bottom of the U, move your forefinger down toward the navel 1 inch and then go to the left (or right) 1 inch. This point is abbreviated CB for CollarBone even though it is not on the collarbone (or clavicle) per se. It is at the beginning of the collarbone and we call it the collarbone point because that is a lot easier to say than “the junction where the sternum (breastbone), collarbone and the first rib meet.”

    points

**On the side of the body, at a point even with the nipple (for men) or in the middle of the bra strap (for women). It is about 4 inches below the armpit. This point is abbreviated UA for Under the Arm.

    points

**For men, one inch below the nipple. For ladies, where the underskin of the breast meets the chest wall. This point is abbreviated BN for Below
Nipple. As discussed below, this point has been added for this edition.

    points

**On the outside edge of your thumb at a point even with the base of the thumbnail. This point is abbreviated Th for Thumb.

    points

**On the side of your index finger (the side facing your thumb) at a point even with the base of the fingernail. This point is abbreviated IF for Index Finger.

    points

**On the side of your middle finger (the side closest to your thumb) at a point even with the base of the fingernail. This point is abbreviated MF for Middle Finger.

    points

**On the inside of your baby finger (the side closest to your thumb) at a point even with the base of the fingernail. This point is abbreviated BF for Baby Finger.

    points

**The last point is the karate chop point….which has been previously described under the section on The Setup. It is located in the middle of the fleshy part on the o utside of the hand between the top of the wrist bone and the base of the baby finger. It is abbreviated KC for Karate Chop.

    25

-The abbreviations for these points are summarized below in the same order as given above.

EB = Beginning of the EyeBrow
SE = Side of the Eye
    UE = Under the Eye
    UN = Under the Nose
    Ch = Chin
CB = Beginning of the CollarBone
    UA = Under the Arm
    BN = Below the Nipple
    Th = Thumb
    IF = Index Finger
    MF = Middle Finger
    BF = Baby Finger
    KC = Karate Chop

-Please notice that these tapping points proceed down the body. That is, each tapping point is below the one before it. That should make it a snap to memorize. A few trips through it and it should be yours forever.
-Also note that the BN point has been added since the making of the videos that accompany this course. It was originally left out because it was awkward for ladies to tap while in social situations (restaurants, etc.). Even though the EFT results have been superb without it, I include it now for completeness.

    Ingredient #3…The 9 Gamut Procedure

-The 9 Gamut Procedure is, perhaps, the most bizarre looking process within EFT. Its purpose is to “fine tune” the brain and it does so via some eye movements and some humming and counting. Through connecting nerves, certain parts of the brain are stimulated when the eyes are moved. Likewise the right side of the brain (the creative side) is engaged when you hum a song and the left side (the digital side) is engaged when you count.
-The 9 Gamut Procedure is a 10 second process wherein 9 of these “brain stimulating” actions are performed while continuously tapping on one of the body’s energy points…..the Gamut point. It has been found, after years of experience, that this routine can add efficiency to EFT and hastens your progress towards emotional freedom…

especially when sandwiched between 2 trips through The Sequence.
-One way to help memorize The Basic Recipe is to look at it as though it was a ham sandwich. The Setup is the preparation for the ham sandwich and the sandwich itself consists of two slices of bread (The Sequence) with the ham, or middle portion, as the 9 Gamut Procedure. It looks like this…

    The Setup

    The Ham Sandwich

    The Sequence (Bread)
    9 Gamut (Ham)
    The Sequence (Bread)
    gamutpoint

-To do the 9 Gamut Procedure, you must first locate the Gamut point. It is on the back of either hand and is 1/2 inch behind the midpoint between the knuckles at the base of the ring finger and the little finger. If you draw an imaginary line between the knuckles at the base of the ring finger and little finger and consider that line to be the base of an equilateral triangle whose other sides converge to a point (apex) in the direction of the wrist, then the gamut point would be located at the apex of the triangle.
-Next, you must perform 9 different actions while tapping the Gamut point continuously. The 9 Gamut actions are:

    1. Eyes closed.
    2. Eyes open.
    3. Eyes hard down right while holding the head steady.    (like attempting to look at the floor)
    4. Eyes hard down left while holding the head steady.                                         ”
    5. Roll eyes in a circle as though your nose was at the center of a clock and you were trying to see all the numbers in order.
    6. Same as #5 only reverse the direction in which you roll your eyes.
    7. Hum 2 seconds of a song (suggest Happy Birthday).
    8. Count rapidly from 1 to 5.
    9. Hum 2 seconds of a song again.

    26

-Note that these 9 actions are presented in a certain order and I suggest that you me morize them in the order given. However, you can mix the order up if you wish so long as you do all 9 of them….and….you perform 7, 8 and 9 as a unit. That is, you hum 2 seconds of a song…then count…then hum the song again, in that order. Years of experience have proven this to be important.
-Also, note that for some people humming Happy Birthday causes resistance because it brings up memories of unhappy birthdays. In this case, you can either use EFT on those unhappy memories and resolve them…or…you can side step this issue for now by having them hum some other song.

    Ingredient #4…The Sequence (again)

-The fourth…and last…ingredient in The Basic Recipe was mentioned above. It is an identical trip through The Sequence.

    The Reminder Phrase

-Once memorized, The Basic Recipe becomes a lifetime friend. It can be applied to an almost endless list of emotional and physical problems and provides relief from most of them. However, there’s one more concept we need to develop before we can apply The Basic Recipe to a given problem. It’s called the Reminder Phrase.
-When a football quarterback throws a pass he aims it at a particular receiver. He doesn’t just throw the ball in the air and hope someone will catch it. Likewise, The Basic Recipe needs to be aimed at a specific problem. Otherwise, it will bounce around aimlessly with little or no effect.
-You “aim” The Basic Recipe by applying it while “tuned in” to the problem from which you want relief. This tells your system which problem needs to be the receiver.
-Remember the discovery statement which states…

“The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.”

-Negative emotions come about because you are tuned into certain thoughts or circumstances which, in turn, cause your energy system to disrupt. Otherwise, you function normally. One’s fear of

heights is not present, for example, while one is reading the comic section of the Sunday newspaper (and therefore not tuned in to the problem).
-Tuning in to a problem can be done by simply thinking about it. In fact, tuning in means thinking about it. Thinking about the problem will bring about the energy disruptions involved which then….and only then….can be balanced by applying The Basic Recipe. Without tuning in to the problem….thereby creating those energy disruptions….The Basic Recipe does nothing.
-Tuning in is seemingly a very simple process. You merely think about the problem while applying The Basic Recipe. That’s it….at least in theory.
-However, you may find it a bit difficult to consciously think about the problem while you are tapping, humming, counting, etc. That’s why I’m introducing a Reminder Phrase that you can repeat continually while you are performing The Basic Recipe.
-The Reminder Phrase is simply a word or short phrase that describes the problem and that you repeat out loud each time you tap one of the points in The Sequence. In this way you continually “remind” your system about the problem you are working on.
-The best Reminder Phrase to use is usually identical to what you choose for the affirmation you use in The Setup. For example, if you are working on a fear of public speaking, The Setup affirmation would go like this….

Even though I have this fear of public speaking, I deeply and completely accept myself.

-Within this affirmation, the underlined words….fear of public speaking….are ideal candidates for use as the Reminder Phrase.
-You may notice that Adrienne and I sometimes use a bit shorter version of this Reminder Phrase when dealing with people on the recordings included with this course. We might, for example, use “public speaking fear” or just “public speaking” instead of the somewhat longer version above. That’s just one of the shortcuts we have grown accustomed to after years of experience with these techniques. For your purposes, however, you can simplify your life by just using the identical words for the Reminder Phrase as you use for the affirmation in The Setup. That way you will minimize any possibility for error.

    27

-Now here’s an interesting point that you will most certainly notice on the audios and some of the videos. When Adrienne and I are helping people with EFT we don’t always have them repeat a Reminder Phrase. That’s because we have discovered over time that simply stating the affirmation during The Setup is usually sufficient to “tune in” to the problem at hand. The subconscious mind usually locks on to the problem throughout The Basic Recipe even though all the tapping, humming, counting, etc. would seem to be distracting.
-But this is not always true and, with our extensive training and experience, we are able to recognize whether or not using the Reminder Phrase is necessary. As stated, it is not usually necessary but….when it is necessary it is really necessary and must be used.
-What’s beautiful about EFT is that you don’t need to have our experience in this regard. You don’t have to be able to figure out whether or not the Reminder Phrase is necessary. You can just assume it is always necessary and thereby assure yourself of always being tuned in to the problem by simply repeating the Reminder Phrase as instructed. It does no harm to repeat the Reminder Phrase when it is not necessary and will serve as an invaluable tool when it is. This is part of the 100% overhaul concept mentioned earlier. We do many things in each round of The Basic Recipe that may not be necessary for a given problem. But when a particular part of The Basic Recipe is necessary…it is absolutely critical.
-It does no harm to include everything…even what may be unnecessary…and it only takes 1 minute per round. This includes always repeating the Reminder Phrase each time you tap a point during The Sequence. It costs nothing to include it….not even time….because it can be repeated within the same time it takes to tap each energy point 7 times.
-This concept about the Reminder Phrase is an easy one. But just to be complete, I am including a few samples below:

    **headache
    **anger towards my father
    **war memory
    **stiffness in my neck
    **nightmares

    **craving for alcohol
    **fear of snakes
    **depression

    Subsequent Round Adjustments

-Let’s say you are using The Basic Recipe for some problem (fear, headache, anger, etc.). Sometimes the problem will simply vanish after just one round while, at other times, one round provides only partial relief. When only partial relief is obtained, you will need to do one or more additional rounds.
-Those subsequent rounds need to be adjusted slightly for best results. Here’s why: One of the main reasons why the first round doesn’t always completely eliminate a problem is because of the re-emergence of Psychological Reversal…that interfering blockage that The Setup is designed to correct.
-This time, Psychological Reversal shows up in a somewhat different form. Instead of blocking your progress altogether it now blocks any remaining progress. You have already made some headway but become stopped part way toward complete relief because Psychological Reversal enters in a manner that keeps you from getting any better still.
-Since the subconscious mind tends to be very literal, the subsequent rounds of The Basic Recipe need to address the fact that you are working on the remaining problem. Accordingly, the affirmation contained within The Setup needs to be adjusted as does the Reminder Phrase.
-Here’s the adjusted format for The Setup affirmation:

Even though I still have some of this __________, I deeply and completely accept myself.

-Please note the emphasized words (still & some) and how they change the thrust of the affirmation toward the remainder of the problem. It should be easy to make this adjustment and, after a little experience, you will fall into it quite naturally.
-Study the adjusted affirmations below. They reflect adjustments to the original affirmations shown earlier in this section.

    28

**Even though I still have some of this fear of public speaking, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I still have some of this headache, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I still have some of this anger towards my father, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I still have some of this war memory, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I still have some of this stiffness in my neck, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I still have some of these nightmares, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I still have some of this craving for alcohol, I deeply and completely accept myself. **Even though I still have some of this fear of snakes, I deeply and completely accept myself.
**Even though I still have some of this depression, I deeply and completely accept myself.

-The Reminder Phrase is also easily adjusted. Just put the word remaining before the previously used phrase. Here, as examples, are adjusted versions of the previous Reminder Phrases.

    **remaining headache
    **remaining anger towards my father
    **remaining war memory
    **remaining stiffness in my neck
    **remaining nightmares
    **remaining craving for alcohol
    **remaining fear of snakes
    **remaining depression

-This completes the features of The Basic Recipe. You now need two things to be effective with it. You need to memorize it and you need a few tips on how to apply it. Those tips are next.

Tips on How to Apply EFT

Testing — Aspects — Persistence Pays — Be Specific Where Possible
The Generalization Effect — Try It On Everything — EFT in a Nutshell

-EFT is remarkably simple to apply. Just customize the 1 minute Basic Recipe with a Setup affirmation and Reminder Phrase that aims at your problem. Then do as many rounds as necessary until the problem is gone.
-This easy process can be used, with persistence, to literally re-engineer your system.
-It will unload the fears, anger, grief, depression and other negative emotions that cause people to drive through life with their brakes on. And….along the way….it may give you relief from headaches, asthma, pain and a seemingly unending list of physical ailments.
-This section of the course adds a few tips…some useful insights…so you can make better use of EFT. It takes you behind the scenes and helps you build a firmer foundation beneath your new skills.

    Testing

-You will notice on the videos and audios that Adrienne and I are constantly asking people to evaluate the extent of their problem on a scale of 0 to 10 (where 10 represents maximum intensity and 0 represents no intensity whatsoever).

This provides a benchmark against which to measure your progress. You might start at a 6, for instance, and then go to a 3….and then a 1….and finally to 0….as various rounds of The Basic Recipe are applied.

    meter

-You should always measure the intensity as it exists NOW….as you think about it….and not as you think it would be in the actual situation. Remember, The Basic Recipe balances the disruptions in your energy system as they exist NOW while you are tuned in to the thought or circumstance.
-Here’s an example of how it works. Let’s say you have a fear of spiders that you would like to put behind you. If there is no spider present to cause you any

    29

emotional intensity then close your eyes and imagine seeing a spider or imagine a past time when a spider scared you. Assess your intensity on a scale of 0 to 10 as it exists NOW while you think about it. If you estimate it at a 7, for example, then you have a benchmark against which to measure your progress.

-Now do one round of The Basic Recipe and imagine the spider again. If you can get no trace whatsoever of your previous emotional intensity then you are done. If, on the other hand, you go to, let’s say, a 4 then you need to perform subsequent rounds until 0 is reached.

    Aspects

    - You might wonder at this point if getting to 0 while just thinking about a spider will hold up when you are actually confronted with a real spider. The answer is usually….yes!!
-In most cases, the energy disruptions that occur while thinking about the spider are the same as those when you are in the presence of a real spider. That’s why the original energy balancing tends to hold in the real circumstances.

    thinker

-The exception to this is when some new aspect of the problem comes up in the real situation that wasn’t there when you were just thinking about it. For example, you may have been thinking about a stationary spider that didn’t move. If that movement is an important aspect of your fear and…if it was absent from your thinking when the original rounds were done…then that part of the fear will arise when you see a moving spider. This is a reasonably common occurrence and it doesn’t mean that EFT didn’t work.
-It simply means there is more to do. Just apply The Basic Recipe to the new aspect (moving spider) until your emotional response goes to 0. Once all aspects have been eliminated your phobic response to spiders will be history and you will be perfectly calm around them.
-The notion of aspects is an important one in EFT. As in the spider example above, some problems have many pieces…or aspects…to them and the problem will not be completely relieved until all of them are addressed.

Actually, each of these aspects qualifies as a separate problem even though they seem to be all lumped together. The fear of a stationary spider and the fear of a moving spider, for example, would seem to be lumped together. In fact, they are separate problems and need to be addressed separately by EFT.
-Different aspects are possible with just about any problem you want to address with EFT. Sometimes they take the form of a series of traumatic memories such as memories of war, abuse or rape. Each of those memories may be a separate problem, or aspect, and needs to be addressed individually before complete relief is obtained.
-Please understand that where several aspects of an emotional problem are present, you may not notice any relief until all aspects are reduced to 0 by The Basic Recipe. This becomes very clear when you compare it to its counterpart in physical healing. If, for example, you have a simultaneous headache, toothache and stomach ache, you will not feel healthy until all 3 are gone. The pain may seem to shift but it is, nonetheless, still pain. So it is with emotional issues that contain different aspects. Until all aspects are gone you may not feel you are getting relief even though you have taken care of 1 or more aspects.

    Persistence Pays

-As a newcomer to EFT, you may lack the experience to be able to identify specific aspects and address them individually with The Basic Recipe. That’s okay. You need only go with whatever feeling you are having and address that feeling with The Basic Recipe. Your subconscious mind knows what you are working on. You might address this “feeling” with a Setup affirmation that goes…“Even though I have this feeling, I deeply and completely accept myself” and a Reminder Phrase that says…“this feeling.”
-Please understand that the majority of the problems The Basic Recipe addresses are not laden with numerous aspects. Most problems are easy to identify and just as easily relieved. But just in case you happen to have one of those more involved problems and you are unable to identify specific aspects of it, then I suggest you do 3 rounds of The Basic Recipe for “this feeling” or “this problem” once per day (that’s about 3 minutes per day) for 30 days. Your subconscious mind has a way of bringing up what is necessary and you should have relief long before the 30 days are up. EFT, as you can tell, is…a very flexible process…and will often make progress on problems that are outside your awareness.

    Soc. Anxiety fear of Pub-speak’g

Who Would Have Thought That Acupressure Could Relieve Social Anxiety Better Than Drugs or Therapy?

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) Americans say they are more afraid of public speaking than they are of snakes or spiders. Most live normal lives despite their stage fright, but an estimated 35 million suffer from social anxiety disorder, a severe fear of meeting strangers, becoming the center or focus of attention, or performing for a group. Also known as social phobia, social anxiety is the third most common psychiatric disorder in the United States after depression and alcohol dependence. Psychiatric drugs that treat the condition are being tested in clinical trials.

But the best treatment for social anxiety, according to a growing number of psychologists and health care professionals, may be a drug-free do-it-yourself procedure called EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). Its premise is that fears, phobias, and the physical symptoms they generate are caused by disruptions along the body’s energy meridians. These are the same energy paths mapped thousands of years ago by Chinese acupuncturists. Stimulating key acupuncture points by tapping on them with the fingertips restores the energy flow and alleviates symptoms.

This simple procedure has been found clinically successful for all forms of anxiety in over 10 years of clinical trials.

Canadian psychiatrist Curtis Steele, MD, calls EFT the single most effective technique he has used in 45 years of practice. “I’ve had considerable success using EFT in the treatment of social anxiety, panic attacks, and many other disorders,” he says.

    • The physical symptoms of social anxiety disorder include rapid heartbeat, sweating, tremors, nausea, diarrhea, muscle tension, muscle cramps, blushing, confusion, and dizziness. These symptoms stem from an excessive fear of scrutiny by others or a persistent fear of embarrassment and humiliation when speaking to strangers. The symptoms also occur when meeting new people, when using a public restroom, or when participating in any performance, sports event, or public presentation. According to the American Psychiatric Association, social anxiety can lead to panic disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, and depression.

Severe social anxiety can cause chronic unemployment, dropping out of school, drug or alcohol abuse, suicidal thoughts, and other devastating results.

    • The problem often begins in childhood, becomes intense during high school, and lasts a lifetime. More common in women than men, social anxiety appears to run in families. It affects one out of seven Americans.

EFT practitioners report that in training workshops, it’s not uncommon for someone who was paralyzed with stage fright to use the EFT tapping process while focusing on that fear. While doing so, they suddenly relax and begin speaking or singing while thoroughly enjoying the experience. Practitioners have offered EFT as a first-aid treatment for people having an emotional melt-down just before making a presentation or competing in a sports event. EFT has also helped those who couldn’t use public restrooms.

Gary Craig, the Stanford-trained engineer who developed EFT, collects reports from EFT practitioners around the world. “Hundreds of these are posted at the EFT website,” he says, “including dozens relating to social phobias and performance anxiety. It usually takes just a few minutes to learn EFT, and the results are often instantaneous and permanent. Once the underlying cause of fear and panic disappears, it doesn’t usually come back. If it does, the person can tap it away. Physicians should always be consulted on medical issues, however.”

That’s good new for those who are too terrified to think about things like auditions, job interviews, speeches, marriage proposals, or even a trip to the supermarket. EFT can be used by people of all ages, including children, and the EFT website features numerous reports about children overcoming shyness, bullying, stage fright, and other fears with EFT’s combination of tapping and mental imagery.

Over 1,000,000 have downloaded Craig’s free training manual and another 10,000 download it each month.

The official EFT Manual, which has been translated by volunteer practitioners into over twenty languages, explains the basics so that anyone can begin applying EFT right away. The manual can be freely downloaded at

Wellness that is being allowed, or the wellness that is being denied, is all about the mindset, the mood, the attitude, the practiced thoughts. There is not one exception, in any human or beast; because, you can patch them up again and again, and they will just find another way of reverting back to the natural rhythm of their mind. Treating the body really is about treating the mind. It is all psychosomatic. Every bit of it, no exceptions.

    RFK, Jr – Deadly Immunity

First its my turn to discharge a little energy:

Everyone understands that the reason one gets vaccinations is to prevent a possible future illness.  Unless we have escaped from a padded room – there is no reason other than that.  This premise however, is not disconnected from the main thrust of the following article penned by one of our finest people,  Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.  This comes from Salon.com and at the site, is accompanied by several other of his related articles, which I would recommend you   check out.  This is not about a small oversight or the FDA not  knowing what they are doing.  On the contrary, most of us do get it that this has been going on for decades in full awareness and by design to protect their own interests (Corporate) of greed and ascendancy of their power, which then grants them the control of people.

Folks, If we want that control back, it is going to take a major outcry and organized push of our own.  Between the Codex, the World Health Organization and our on-going loss of freedoms to exercise our basic medical choices, I feel we already live in the asylum and I’ll be damned if I can figure out how we let this get so far with millions still in denial.  Our government would NEVER allow that to happen.  Right!  There has been no-one minding the store for a long time now.  It is time to wake up and REALLY smell the coffee.    They have been poisoning our babies and toddlers for a long time.  This must stop.   Autism and other immune disorders are a recent vintage within the last 50 to 70 years and growing worse.  We need to have understanding,  facts (not hype),  common purpose and an intelligent action.  Read on

When a study revealed that mercury in childhood vaccines may have caused autism in thousands of kids, the government rushed to conceal the data — and to prevent parents from suing drug companies for their role in the epidemic.

    By Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Jun 16, 2005 | In June 2000, a group of top government scientists and health officials gathered for a meeting at the isolated Simpsonwood conference center in Norcross, Ga. Convened by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the meeting was held at this Methodist retreat center, nestled in wooded farmland next to the Chattahoochee River, to ensure complete secrecy. The agency had issued no public announcement of the session — only private invitations to 52 attendees. There were high-level officials from the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration, the top vaccine specialist from the World Health Organization in Geneva, and representatives of every major vaccine manufacturer, including GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Wyeth and Aventis Pasteur. All of the scientific data under discussion, CDC officials repeatedly reminded the participants, was strictly “embargoed.” There would be no making photocopies of documents, no taking papers with them when they left.

The federal officials and industry representatives had assembled to discuss a disturbing new study that raised alarming questions about the safety of a host of common childhood vaccines administered to infants and young children. According to a CDC epidemiologist named Tom Verstraeten, who had analyzed the agency’s massive database containing the medical records of 100,000 children, a mercury-based preservative in the vaccines — thimerosal — appeared to be responsible for a dramatic increase in autism and a host of other neurological disorders among children. “I was actually stunned by what I saw,” Verstraeten told those assembled at Simpsonwood, citing the staggering number of earlier studies that indicate a link between thimerosal and speech delays, attention-deficit disorder, hyperactivity and autism. Since 1991, when the CDC and the FDA had recommended that three additional vaccines laced with the preservative be given to extremely young infants — in one case, within hours of birth — the estimated number of cases of autism had increased fifteenfold, from one in every 2,500 children to one in 166 children.

Even for scientists and doctors accustomed to confronting issues of life and death, the findings were frightening. “You can play with this all you want,” Dr. Bill Weil, a consultant for the American Academy of Pediatrics, told the group. The results “are statistically significant.” Dr. Richard Johnston, an immunologist and pediatrician from the University of Colorado whose grandson had been born early on the morning of the meeting’s first day, was even more alarmed. “My gut feeling?” he said. “Forgive this personal comment — I do not want my grandson to get a thimerosal-containing vaccine until we know better what is going on.”

But instead of taking immediate steps to alert the public and rid the vaccine supply of thimerosal, the officials and executives at Simpsonwood spent most of the next two days discussing how to cover up the damaging data. According to transcripts obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, many at the meeting were concerned about how the damaging revelations about thimerosal would affect the vaccine industry’s bottom line.

“We are in a bad position from the standpoint of defending any lawsuits,” said Dr. Robert Brent, a pediatrician at the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware. “This will be a resource to our very busy plaintiff attorneys in this country.” Dr. Bob Chen, head of vaccine safety for the CDC, expressed relief that “given the sensitivity of the information, we have been able to keep it out of the hands of, let’s say, less responsible hands.” Dr. John Clements, vaccines advisor at the World Health Organization, declared that “perhaps this study should not have been done at all.” He added that “the research results have to be handled,” warning that the study “will be taken by others and will be used in other ways beyond the control of this group.”

In fact, the government has proved to be far more adept at handling the damage than at protecting children’s health. The CDC paid the Institute of Medicine to conduct a new study to whitewash the risks of thimerosal, ordering researchers to “rule out” the chemical’s link to autism. It withheld Verstraeten’s findings, even though they had been slated for immediate publication, and told other scientists that his original data had been “lost” and could not be replicated. And to thwart the Freedom of Information Act, it handed its giant database of vaccine records over to a private company, declaring it off-limits to researchers. By the time Verstraeten finally published his study in 2003, he had gone to work for GlaxoSmithKline and reworked his data to bury the link between thimerosal and autism.

Vaccine manufacturers had already begun to phase thimerosal out of injections given to American infants — but they continued to sell off their mercury-based supplies of vaccines until last year. The CDC and FDA gave them a hand, buying up the tainted vaccines for export to developing countries and allowing drug companies to continue using the preservative in some American vaccines — including several pediatric flu shots as well as tetanus boosters routinely given to 11-year-olds.

The drug companies are also getting help from powerful lawmakers in Washington. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, who has received $873,000 in contributions from the pharmaceutical industry, has been working to immunize vaccine makers from liability in 4,200 lawsuits that have been filed by the parents of injured children. On five separate occasions, Frist has tried to seal all of the government’s vaccine-related documents — including the Simpsonwood transcripts — and shield Eli Lilly, the developer of thimerosal, from subpoenas. In 2002, the day after Frist quietly slipped a rider known as the “Eli Lilly Protection Act” into a homeland security bill, the company contributed $10,000 to his campaign and bought 5,000 copies of his book on bioterrorism. Congress repealed the measure in 2003 — but earlier this year, Frist slipped another provision into an anti-terrorism bill that would deny compensation to children suffering from vaccine-related brain disorders. “The lawsuits are of such magnitude that they could put vaccine producers out of business and limit our capacity to deal with a biological attack by terrorists,” says Dean Rosen, health policy advisor to Frist.

Even many conservatives are shocked by the government’s effort to cover up the dangers of thimerosal. Rep. Dan Burton, a Republican from Indiana, oversaw a three-year investigation of thimerosal after his grandson was diagnosed with autism. “Thimerosal used as a preservative in vaccines is directly related to the autism epidemic,” his House Government Reform Committee concluded in its final report. “This epidemic in all probability may have been prevented or curtailed had the FDA not been asleep at the switch regarding a lack of safety data regarding injected thimerosal, a known neurotoxin.” The FDA and other public-health agencies failed to act, the committee added, out of “institutional malfeasance for self protection” and “misplaced protectionism of the pharmaceutical industry.”

      Issue: # 2009 – 29/July 17, 2009

Hello! Welcome to The Paleo Diet Update, where we explore scientific findings that reveal the connections between diet and disease, specifically the more recent dietary changes that defy our evolutionary heritage.

Over the course of the Paleolithic period that comprised almost all of human evolution, we evolved a specific genome that has only changed 0.01 percent during the past 10,000 years. Today, however, almost three-fourths of the calories in the typical Western diet are derived from foods that were rarely, if ever, eaten by our Stone Age (Paleolithic) ancestors. The discordance between our genetic heritage and current diet results in epidemic levels of disease rarely, if ever, seen among hunter-gatherer societies.

In this issue, we’ll share the real-life experience of how a family is using the Paleo Diet to overcome Prader-Willi Syndrome and more. We’ll also show you the simplest way to prepare roast turkey.

      Enjoy.

The Paleo Diet Helps Child Beat Prader-Willi Syndrome by Loren Cordain, Ph.D.
In response to our recent article titled The Hidden Cost of Childhood Obesity, Lara described how the Paleo Diet has helped her family. With the hope of helping others, we’d like to share her experience with our readers. Thank you, Lara, for describing the importance of nutrition in helping with both disease and vigor. Here’s Lara’s story:

“My whole family eats the paleo way. My son is 5 years old and has Prader-Willi Syndrome. The paleodiet helps him to beat his genetic ‘destiny.’ He is lean and active and does not have the constant hunger that is characteristic of the syndrome.”

One of the symptoms of Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a chronic feeling of hunger that can lead to excessive eating and life-threatening obesity, according to the USA Prader-Willi Syndrome Association. The association reports that one in 12,000 to 15,000 people are estimated to have PWS, and it is the most common identified genetic cause of obesity.

Long-term consumption of high glycemic-load foods has been associated with increased risk of obesity. By emphasizing low glycemic-load foods, the Paleo Diet helps to optimize body weight. The correct balance of carbohydrate, protein and fat that the diet provides also improves blood-lipid profiles, helps you to feel fuller, and enables you to burn more calories.

“My daughters also eat the paleo way at home. They are aged 11 and 8 and are competitive gymnasts. We started on the paleodiet a couple of years ago and it was fascinating to watch my oldest daughter’s body change. She became extraordinarily strong and muscular and her stamina far exceeds those of the other girls on the team.”

The Paleo Diet replaces excess carbohydrate consumption with muscle-building lean proteins, and alkalinity-enhancing, nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables. These foods provide antioxidant vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals to fuel muscle growth and boost immune function.

The diet also uses animal protein (the richest source of branch chain amino acids) to build and repair muscle. To prevent muscle protein loss, the Paleo Diet helps to maintain a net base balance. After digestion, foods release acidic or basic substances into the circulatory system. The Paleo Diet emulates our hunter-gatherer ancestors’ reliance on fruits and vegetables to provide a net-base-producing diet.

“I always insist that she have a protein snack before she goes to gymnastics practice. One day she went to gymnastics practice from a teammate’s house. The other mom gave the girls a cookie and lemonade for the snack. My daughter was shocked to discover that she couldn’t make it though practice. She found herself sitting on the side tired like the other girls on the team. She was used to being the girl who always had enough energy for another rep.”

By emphasizing low-glycemic foods, the Paleo Diet helps to keep insulin levels steady – so you don’t experience an energy crash, just increased stamina and improved mental focus.

“My daughters really like my smoothies. They are athletic and lean and need more calories than their brother (who has PWS). Most nights, after he is in bed, I make them a smoothie with fruit and coconut milk and honey and ice. They claim it is better than most ice cream and I think it helps to cut back on any sense of deprivation that they may have from our diet.

That said, we do joke about the fact that when my middle child is away from the family she does a total carb load. I don’t worry about it that much because she is healthy and I know that most of the time she eats the way our family eats. Plus, I am sure that, like my oldest daughter, at some point she will notice the connection between what she eats and her performance and will modify her choices accordingly.

I cannot tell you how many families (including children) have been converted to this way of eating by watching our family and having dinner at our place. I truly believe that the Paleo Diet is the best-kept secret in health and nutrition. I am doing my best, though, to get the word out about it.”

      Lara

Thank you again, Lara, and best wishes to you and your family for long, healthful, and vigorous lives.

Next time, we’ll take a look at a degenerative eye disorder, keratoconus, and studies that have used supplements to improve the visual distortions. We’ll also share ideas for how you can help to upgrade junk food to healthy snacks.

The Simplest Roast Turkey by Nell Stephenson
Sometimes the simplest things are the best. While there are times when an elaborately prepared meal is in order, most people struggle to find time to prepare ANY dinner, let alone one requiring hours of prep time.

How about a recipe that calls for three things? Yes – three. Those are fresh, wild turkey bone-in (less pricey that the boneless counterpart), skin-on turkey breast (the skin is removed before serving, but keeps the moisture in the meat while it cooks), black or white peppercorn and some olive oil.

Start by heating a cast iron skillet with olive oil over a high flame, and then sear the turkey breast for a few minutes on each side until nicely browned. To finish, place the turkey in a 450-degree oven for 30 minutes, and check the internal temperature to ensure it reaches 160 degrees F for safety. You can let the turkey sit outside of the oven for 15 minutes before serving.

While you wait, you’ve got adequate time to flash steam some kale, and literally throw together a fresh green salad with strawberries, raw walnuts, olives, shredded carrot and yellow bell pepper (remember the colors of the rainbow theme).

Voila – a simple, yet absolutely delicious, meal in no time at all!

      News and Upcoming Events
      • Inflammation May Trigger Alzheimer’s Disease: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs have been associated with protection against Alzheimer’s disease, and a new study is shedding light on how the two are connected. The Paleo Diet reduces inflammation because it’s free of grains and legumes to reduce the risk of a long list of diseases that, like Alzheimer’s, are associated with inflammation.
      • Elevated Insulin Linked To Increased Breast Cancer Risk: A new study in the International Journal of Cancer looks at the increased risk of breast cancer for postmenopausal women. Breast cancer has been linked to obesity and diabetes. Both conditions involve insulin resistance, which causes increases in circulating levels of insulin. Long-term consumption of high-glycemic foods causes insulin resistance. By eliminating high-glycemic foods, the Paleo Diet promotes one of the most important strategies to maintain ideal weight and greatly improve the chance for a longer, disease-free life.
      • Proton Pump Inhibitors (Acid-suppressive Drugs) May Induce the Symptoms They Treat: A new study has found that proton pump inhibitors (PPI) dependency could be one of the explanations for the rapidly and continuously increasing use of PPIs. Using gastric acid-suppressive medications can also increase vulnerability to infections because stomach acidity is a major defense against ingested pathogens. Previous research found that use of all acid-suppressive drugs was associated with a 27 percent increase in the risk of pneumonia. Higher risks for PPI or H2-receptor antagonist drugs were also found. Following the Paleo Diet prevents the need for antacids, and the related risk factors.

“My father had high blood pressure and high cholesterol and I was headed down the same road. At first I sold myself on it being a hereditary issue. One of my flight surgeons had mentioned possibly putting me on prescription drugs to help. I did not want to start down this road, fixing problems by taking medication that could possibly cause more problems and not get to the root cause.

Bottom line. I started on the Paleo Diet and not long after my blood pressure and cholesterol both fell within normal limits. I have also lost quite a bit of weight. I never considered myself to be overweight prior but now I think I am near my optimal body weight. I also noticed an increase in energy levels throughout the day, after my body got accustomed to the new diet.”

      • The Paleo Diet Increases Energy, Stops Joint Pain and Improves Overall Firmness: The many reasons to go Paleo include the real-life success of people just like you who solved health problems without risking drug side effects. The Paleo Diet also provides more subtle benefits such as improved energy and firmness:

“I’ve been eating this way for about 8 weeks…The main benefit though has been how I feel. Much, much more energy. No more joint pain. I felt like a creaky old lady at the age of 53, and found myself wincing upon getting out of bed in the morning.

I also noticed something more subtle, which is that my body feels overall more firm, even without exercise. The texture of my flesh seems less “blubbery,” out of proportion to my modest weight loss. A co-worker who started the diet on my recommendation spontaneously mentioned to me that she had noticed this as well, even though we hadn’t discussed it.”

“I thought you would like to hear my experience. I had ‘incurable’ rosacea which was successfully treated with expensive prescription creams. My dermatologist said that I would have to live with it the rest of my life.

After I went on the Paleo Diet, my skin got a lot better, so I tried not putting on the cream, and the rosacea was gone. I get a hint of it coming back whenever I have a bad eating week, but I just get back on the Paleo Diet and it goes away again.”

In this section, we’ll share readers’ concerns and questions about nutrition and the Paleo Diet to help you better understand how to use the Paleo Diet to optimize your health and fitness. Here’s Loren Cordain’s response to this question: “Are there any specific foods, within Paleo, that are advocated (or discouraged) in assisting with women’s regular monthly cycles?”

“I can’t comment upon specific foods, but I have many anecdotal reports that anovulation, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), irregular or painful periods seem to disipate upon adoption of a Paleo diet. I suspect that multiple dietary elements are involved that normalize endocrine function regulating ovulation.”
